Traveling

This might be the wrong place to ask this question, but I'm sure someone will move it to the appropriate place.

Has anyone pulled a 35' 5th wheel from the very northern tip of Washington State down to Los Angles, CA using HWY 1 and HWY 101? Is is possible, is it safe, is it doable? We are pulling a 35' Montana 3121RL with a F-350 6.7 diesel 4x4 short bed.

Thanks your any help or advise anyone might have!!!!!!!

Coming from WA to northern CA on Hwy-101 is a piece of cake assuming Hwy-101 is open in OR. Check road conditions as slides on it tend to cause problems. If you want to go further south in CA that isn't a problem either but there are some considerations. It can be done staying on Hwy-101 through San Francisco but it will be a test of your driving ability. Most prefer to skip around S.F. through the East Bay (Oakland side) and pick up Hwy-101 south of the city. Be aware that Hwy-1 is closed somewhere below Big Sur (not that you want to tow down it) so you will want to be on Hwy-101 down there.

Down to north of the San Francisco bay area is doable on 1 and 101, but you might want to jump across to the east side towards Berkeley and come down to the 101. There are parts of Hwy 1 that are closed so 101 down to Pismo might be a better option. Some years ago, we came up from San Diego going to Oxnard, and that was the scariest drive on 101. The I-5 from San Diego was and is always busy, but that short run on 101 out of LA seemed deadly but we made it. Just be very careful.

There are a number of intersections (<10?) on the 101 near the Golden Gate where it cuts through SF that are narrow and pretty short (3x your rig?). Personally, don't think it's worth the hassle. Hence, the 580 bridge and the east side of the bay is a good route.

The 101 near King City south of Monterey has been under construction for last 3 years. There were sections where concrete barriers were placed on both sides of the lane - doable but had to drive about 40mph. We drive it 2-3x/year with the last time being Dec, 22. Last I read, it's supposed to be done but I find that up-to-date info is hard to find. Yanks RV park is just north of KC and they might be your best local source for an update. (We usually over night there.) You can zoom in on the google satellite view and see an example of the barriers. There is a semi-truck and it gives an idea about the space available. Again, this might be completed by now.

Hwy 1 really depends on where you are going. There are sections that are open 1 or 2 lane highways and sections where it cuts through a town that you may want to avoid.

Happy travels!
