Bumper mount for bike rack

Anyone use a bumper mounted receiver for a bike rack on the newer Montana?
My old TT from years ago, the bumper and welds were not strong enough at all, but I have seen many new fivers with fully welded rear bumpers, not just Montana's but other brands. I have inspected mine and its fully welded, not spot welded. I have had many people tell me that fully welded supports on the rear bumper will carry a bike rack no problem. On my old TT, it was just spot welds, and after one trip, I decided it just wasn't safe. Id like to do it on my Montana next summer to bring the kids bikes along on trips.

our 2016 3720 we put the receiver on the bumper for a bike rack traveled 5500 miles with what I thought were no issues I was wrong. I could only mount (bolt) it under the bumper no clearance on the top side. when we got home I noticed the bumper was arched up upon inspection the receiver had bottomed out causing the bending. the welds looked good the tubing looked good no deformation. taking her down this week to have receiver welded on top of bumper and reinforced. that's my experience.

Rich, is it a receiver install to the frame or is a bumper mounted receiver?

thanks

My Montana bumper is much more robust than my previous Wildcat's. I carry two bikes on it.

I put our two bicycles in the basement of our 3720RL by taking off the front wheels and hanging them from the basement ceiling. Then I put the front wheels under the bed or in the front storage bay. I never feel safe with the bikes bouncing around on the back bumper. Plus they stay safe and dry.

My 2010 3000RK came with a frame mounted receiver. Bought a 2 bike carrier from Swagman and have driven across U.S. and down to Mesa Arizona for 5 yrs and never a problem.

Ed, We have a 2017 3950BR and were looking for a hitch to hook up our bike rack. I contacted Lippert, gave them the vin and frame number. They determined a bolt on boat hitch was the proper hitch to install on my unit. With the material they identified, the warranty will remain intact and the hitch is rated for 150 lbs. The unit is currently at Keystone in Goshen. Lippert stated they will install it at Keystone for the same price, which saves me from having to drive it to them.

Ed, call Lippert at 574-537-8900. Select the option for frame tech support. Tell them you are interested in a boat hitch. Give them the vin and frame number of your unit. They will determine which type is appropriate for your unit. Get the price, shipping cost and lead time for delivery. If you wish to do the installation yourself, ask for the installation instructions. I am having them do the installation as I still am in warranty.
