Unusual Camping Contraptions

One thing about Ocean Lakes at Mytle Beach is you always see some interesting things each Summer. If you go during the off season it is much more tame, but June and July, wow! I have seen busses converted into makeshift motor homes. Tents with A/Cs rigged up on milk crates. Old popups that has had the canvas removed and replaced with OSB plywood. One guy had even taken a large utility trailer and hauled a utility building down on it. He was camping in it. We are going to Disney in a couple of weeks, but in July we're at Ocean Lakes. It's always entertaining! I've never seen anything like the contraptions people show up with anywhere else.

We had a 1950's bus conversion over the weekend and several people watching TV in their tents, but nothing as interesting as you've seen.

Tents with A/Cs rigged up on milk crates??? Now I just got to see that some day, ha ha, thanks for the morning smile!

Last spring in Lethbridge, Alberta there was a couple in a tent accross the way from us with two young children, two large dogs and a fish tank plugged in on the picnic table. Perhaps they were relocating some where???

couple years ago we saw a tent camper with a fan. not usual right, but the fan was about 5 feet across and about 5 feet high with a 1 hp motor. It sounded like an airplane. It made a breeze for the whole area.

Ocean Lakes is actually a great destination. It is Ocean Front at Myrtle Beach. The thing is it is very big. Mostly conventional campers, fifth wheels, and nice motor homes. But the place is so big there is always a couple of rare sights there only some of which I mentioned. Again, the crazy stuff you only see in June/July. The rest of the year it's middle aged and retired folks only. Visit their website at OceanLakes.com.

I camped there over an Easter weekend a couple of years ago. Never agin.....I thought the sites were small and there was a major traffic jam in the campground from all the Golf Carts. The location next to the ocean is great but it was too crowded for me.

Darmar, a fish tank? We've seen families with odd devices at their campground (standing refrigerators and other large electrical devices but never asked why they have what they have. Many times they look like families who lost their homes and have resorted to camping to save funds. It's a sad but true state of the economy.

A/C units in the larger tents is starting to get very popular with many campers. The most effective is those standalone room A/C units and they'll cut a hole in the tent wall and seal the hole pretty good for exhaust ventilation. These units can easily cool a tent interior even though it's quite the battle with the hot sun beading down on the tent. Since many campgrounds have electric and water hookups, there's their power source, or they'll drag along a generator.

To help keep the tent even cooler they'll sometimes rig an oversized tarp over the whole tent to provide extra shade. Apparently this helps a lot. Sure, set up is a bear but if you can keep the tent cool and mama inside in the cool tent and able to read her book or visit with the other people, then that's their goal. The Dads will be outside with the kids and friends. This invariably leads to their first trailer and the rest they say, is history.

Hey we think we saw the same tent camper with the T1-11 race weekend at Dover Downs in Delaware parked where else??? In the Walmart parking lot. We actually took a picture. It had an room air conditioner cut into the side of the T-1 11. We loved it! Said now they are happy as a lark and no payments. It really does not take much to be camping with some creativity!

Another time at Rehobeth Inlet we saw a tent camper no canvas with a blue tarp covering the whole camper. They also cut a hole in the blue tarp for the small room size airconditioner. The door was cut out and duck taped to the camper. We called it a redneck rv. LOL!

I wonder what the tent dweller purists that go on and on about RVers not being campers have to say about the window unit A/Cs being used with the tents? Against their sacred code???? LOL!!! Well, it sure would beat roasting to death.

Bet they didn't have any mosquitoes! LOL
Have seen lots of fans, but none that large. Many people use fans to rid the site of mosquitoes. And to stay cool. LOL

We have seen cargo trailers used for camping. Some modified to be more comfortable some not.

Does Pirateland at Myrtle Beach still exist. Been there about 15 years ago. It was nice then.

Last year at Mt Gate RV near Shasta Lake, a fairly new 45 ft Prevost pulled in next to me. The owner finished setting up and pushed a button on a hand held remote. What appeared to be heavy metal tray slid out slowly, and with it came a "Mini Cooper convertible" with a hinged windshield, reminiscent of an old Willys Jeep! No photos my phone was left at home. He was a retired NASA engineer, go figure! Got in the Mini and drove off! I was impressed!
