Which truck To Pull With?

What do you pull your Montana, Mountaineer, Big Sky or Cambridge fifth wheel with?

Just a thought, but it is interesting to add GMC and Chevy to gether as they are identical except for the branding.

I have a difficult time understanding the above numbers. We camp a fair amount with horse trailers with living quarters and no matter where we go the ratio of tow vehicles stays fairly consistent. In any group of 30 tow vehicles, 25 will be Fords, 4 will GMC/Chevy and one will be a Dodge. I am not saying that one vehicle is better than another as I believe that all three brands have made enormous improvements to their products and they are much better than five years ago. We camp and ride at Big South Fork where there is a mix of people from many states but the ratios never seem to change. I have owned all three brands but have owned only Fords since 2001 and really have no personal basis to judge the other two brands. I do not wish to start any brand wars here but just wanted to share my own observations.

hummm, went around the park we are at here in MASS and there seems to be about and equal amount of Ford and Chevy/GMC 2 each, and 6 Dodge, all the rest are MH's. Guess it is regional.

At this point in time, adding Chevy and GMC together yields an identical number as Ford, both at 36%, with Dodge at 25%.

It used to be the majority towing the larger trailers were Fords, with Dodge second and GM a very distant third. Remember, I'm talking heavy trailers. Then GM came out with the Duramax and the 8.1 and those loyal to GM who bought the Fords and Dodges to tow the heavy weights went back to GM. Now from what we're seeing, Ford and GM (combined Chevy/GMC) are about equal. Dodge has also gained a bunch but still lags behind the others although they are much closer than they used to be. These are just what we've seen around the country and it applies only to heavier trailers.

I also find it interesting that when in the RV capital, Goshen, IN, watching the delivery guys, a big majority of them are driving Dodges. I would surmise that's because they put on tons of miles and the Cummins longevity is what they're after rather than the better ride and creature comforts of the other brands.

There are a lot of Dodges here in North Idaho and the probable reason is Dave Smith Motors. They are the biggest Dodge dealer in the world and they sell them at an excellent price. They are also a GMC and Chevrolet dealership and they don't sell as many of them. For some reason they can't offer the same type of price on GM's.

Their used vehicle web site seems to be full of 6 liter Fords.

Mike,
That's interesting about Dave Smith's pricing ability on the Chevy's & GMC's. This morning, before I read this, I sent them an email for a quote on a new Chevy. Haven't been called yet. I've also got a 98 Dodge HD Cummins that just turned 100k and I'm concerned that it would have trouble pulling a 3400 or a 3585 even if I tricked it out. Mike in Montana

Hmmm, The thing that comes into play these days is not so much the Diesel brand as what it communicates with, the tranny. As the big three continue to refine this weak link (Ford Torque shift, Chevy Allison, and Dodge ???) they are converging on equality...JMHO.

I agree, I am really surprised that 3/4 tons outnumber 1 tons and that the DRWs are the smaller sample....

Of the 3/4 tons how many have had modifications, addons, and upgrades compared to 1 tons.

Jim, I have added an extra leaf spring and Air Lift air bags (from CW). Will be upgrading tires to 262's soon. Rides great and somewhat easier to maneuver than a dually when not towing.........

I had a 2500 when we started fulltiming and moved to 3500 DRW. The 2500 had air bags because it needed them. The 3500 does not need anything. The 2500 had more power but the 3500 just feels better (stable).

Just an fyi, noneck, the new Dodge 6-speed automatic is an "Orion 68RFE", or probably just Orion. There is also an Aisin but I don't think that applies to many, if any, Montana tuggers.

The only magazine test I have read that had information comparing the Ford TorqShift and the GM Allison rated them about equal but preferred the Ford because it was smarter about when to shift and seem to be a bit more robust in build. Both are proven in durability. Don't shoot me, that's just what those guys said. Having towed with the Ford, I agree it's an excellent transmission. Now, having towed with the new Dodge automatic, I have to say it tops them all, at least in my opinion and I know not everyone will agree. What we don't know about yet is durability but it is looking really good so far.
