Harbor Freight tool question
UPDATE: I called HF and found out it is an imported item, source unidentified, so I will not be ordering it.
I was looking through the latest mailing I received from HF (Catalog 776-C-Spring 2010) and on page 7 I saw an interesting-looking tool on the bottom of the page. It's called a "Torque Multiplier/Lugnut Remover" which supposedly multiplies torque 33 to 1.
Has anyone used one or know anything about it?
I thought it would be good for the truck and the trailer.
Whatcha think?
Larry

Torque multipliers work great. Looks like you lock the handle on that one on another stud or lugnut. Probably be OK for lug nuts, but I wouldn't trust the Chinese to build one that I was gonna be using to torque into the hundreds of foot pounds. That gearbox bust, and you might bust more than the lug nuts.

Does HF have anything that's NOT imported?

They do carry a few quality tools. The stores I've been in have them in a locked cabinet though. DeWalt, Makita and such.
I didn't mean to scare you off the tool. It would probably be fine on the lug nuts. You might look at Snap On and see what a quality multiplier sells for though.

I think you should purchase one and give it a try. You can always return it within thirty days of purchase.

Try "Northern Tools," and see what they may have.

DeWalt, Porter cable, Delta all are part of Black & Decker now, DeWalt is down the drane as far as I can see there battery life is terrable.
As for the lug wrench if I use it once and it saves me a lot of effort I got my monies worth out of it.

I myself stay away from any hand tool not made here, the quality looks good but my hands are worth more than saving a few dollars. I have seen these tools slip or break when applying pressure on them to tighten or break free something tight. I even have seen a 3/8 to 1/2" adapter twist apart. HF makes a lot of other things for a reasonable price that won't get you hurt. Remember the old saying "you get what you pay for" and a good set of tools will last a lifetime.

I think I'll just stick with my 24 inch cheater pipe. Haven't broken it yet, but I did manage to twist off a cross threaded lug. Besides that, DW says I can't pull another trailer just to be sure I have all my tools along.

I beg to differ about the DeWalt batteries. My service trucks have DeWalt 18 volt hammer drills on them and the batteries last over two years with everyday heavy use. We use 18 inch 5/8 nail biter auger bits in the drills and the batteries power the drills just fine day in and day out.

DeWalt is top end Black & Decker; Delta & Porter Cable are another entity. As far as DeWalt, I would rate them as good as anything on the market. I like the fact that they have service centers around that can repair tools on the spot.
