I took a section of 2" black plastic pipe about 2 feet long and used my Dremel tool to cut out groves that match those on the knobs on the awning. I can stand flat footed and reach the knobs now.

Can't beat the multi-ladders. I went with a Werner 13 ft. Aluminum Telescoping Multi Ladder with 300 lb. Load Capacity (Type IA Duty Rating). Great brand and believe it or not, you can often get this on sale at Home Depot for under $60 - I paid $58! and it is usually well over $100.
