Goodbye pyramid

Today, I had a vendor power flush our holding tanks- I was sure the black tank had buildup in it- It turned out to be a buildup of paper- More water and less paper is indicated- Further research is indicated on our choice of tissue- All comments appreciated- THANX in advance for your opinions- Don

Two ply, whatever I find at the discount stores. Never RV paper.

As I have said mega times here, More water, less Paper.

Translated: You can figure out more water, just don't flush, flush and rinse.

Less paper: Don't put the slightly used paper IN the toilet. Small trash can nearby is the depository for that. Take the trash out once a day. Really dirty paper does go down, yaaaa.

WITH MORE WATER!

Calgon sometimes when we roll, especially if we have been sitting for a month or so. Maybe add a touch of laundry detergent. Toilet chemicals, you know that blue stuff, only when the ambient temperatures will be 90ish for days.

Less paper and more water.

(Boondockers are forgiven the more water rule, but, the less paper rule is even MORE important in that situation.)

Happy Flushing!

We have never had an issue with buildup. We use whatever brand of RV paper is available, and once every few dumps, I run a hose into the toilet, fill the tank and dump again.

In our SOB we put the urine paper in a trash can with lid and a scented bag. Cuts way down on solids.

We use the Costco brand (Kirkland) TP. Did the "breakdown" test to prove to myself if it was OK. In less than 5 minutes, the paper was completely gone, and just a "milky solution" was left. So, happy with that. I did discover that "salts" from urine will build up even with liquid in the tank. I have a camping style "porta-john" out in my shop for when I have drank too much water/tea, etc, and don't want to take off dirty shoes/clothes, just to go into the house. Every so often I have to dump it, and flush it. I was AMAZED at how much "mineral" deposit is in the bottom, basically a "salt type" mineral. Comes out easily, with GOOD flushing. But still, I was surprised at the amount of buildup in the bottom of the tank. And for the question I know will come, this is an electric (battery) toilet, with a flusher, so water IS added every time it's used.

We only use paper that is marked septic safe and also do the breakdown test. Earlier this summer we bought a discharge system that shoots a concentrated stream of water into the flow that breaks up everything allowing the discharge to dump through basically a one inch garden hose. The end cap for the trailer dump pipe is clear and the hose is clear so you can observe the flow. The water jet basically liquefies everything before it hits the smaller hose. It works perfectly. I use a second water hose to feed the jet and at the same time I connect the outside shower hose to the black tank flush with a quick connect. I turn the cold shower faucet on to flush the tank at the same time it is draining. A few weeks ago we drained and flushed the tank before we moved out. We then dumped a few gallons of water and some Dawn dishwashing soap into the black tank and let it slosh around during our drive from eastern Virginia to Ohio. When we reached the campground in Ohio we again dumped. All that came out was soapy water, nothing brown and no paper. That further sold us on the value of the system we bought.

In my opinion. it's not really a paper issue as much as it's a matter regular timely cleaning. After all, what difference does paper that breaks apart when it has the crap (pun intended) shaken out of it when all it does when you're in a park, is sit and wait for the evacuation. I've yet to find a chemical that'll affect the paper in any way when the tank and it's contents are stationary so it all boils down to is frequent cleaning and I've found that the installed "sanitizer" system does a poor job at best. After using the sanitizer until the water flows clear for several fills/flushes, I've then used my Flush King backflusher and the volume of waste that it clears after then sanitizer has done it's duty is huge. I don't use the sanitizer any more as the FK is just too effective and thorough.

I'm a big fan of the Flush King as well.

But I find myself using the hose connect less on my 2013 Monte than I did on my 2006 Outback. I believe that's because Monte has a flush system built in, since I can connect a hose to it.

When my black tank is full enough (at least 2/3's full) I will drain it. It the first thing that I do when I break camp. I continue to use the Flush King to see what the color of the discharge is. By draining the black tank with the Flush King attached and the hose onto the Monte's connection, I can do the rest of my chores while my black tank is being spritzed clean.

My wife uses massive amounts of toilet paper with the claims that she doesn't want to get her fingers wet. It's been a argument of ours almost since the day we were married 40+ years ago, and it's an argument I will not win, so I adapt.

I do use AquaChem and a capful of Calgon after every black tank cleaning. And after 8 years of trailering it has worked great for us.

X2 and Walmart carries Scott's RV paper. Happy Camper is the best tank treatment ever (and one of the cheapest). No smell what so ever. I get from Amazon.

Save yourself some money and do not buy RV paper...it's no different than some of the others. Same for any additive to the black tank other than something that might help the emptying process, like Calgon. If you toilet is properly installed and vented, there will be no odor...just like there is no odor at home.

I will agree with the odor issue. If the toilet and plumbing is installed, vented, and working correctly there should never he a odor problem. Buy I disagree with the not using RV paper suggestion. The waste in an RV is not being discharged directly into a 4 inch sewer drain. It is being held in a plastic holding tank and then gravity fed out a small diameter tube into the sewer system. If you want to have issues with you holding tank and gate valves then go ahead and use regular toilet paper. You may get away with it for a long time but you will pay the price in the long run.
