Page Width in Forum

Why are the pages of type wider in some forums than others? When I check most forums the pages are normal width, but some others are wider than my browser display.

I've noticed the same thing. Maybe it has to do with what's in someone's signature?

It has to do with the size of graphics and where you have your "Screen Resolutons" set.

For example, if someone posts a pic that is 900 pixels wide and your Screen Resolutions are set at 640 or 800 pixels than you will be forced to scroll right to see the entire picture. This is the reason I recommend that photos should be no more than 600 pixels wide as there are still many members with older computers using a screen resolution of only 640 pixels.

On newer computers your screen resolutions can be changed by right clicking on your Desk Top, click on Properties, click on Settings. Change your Screen resolutions and click on OK.

For me I have mine set at 1280. It would take a very large pic to cause me to scroll and yet I have had this happen on occasion.

When you do change the resolutions you will also be changing the Font size to a smaller font. You may have to resize your font. Your Icons on your Desktop will also change but none of these are problems that can't be dealt with quite easily.

BTW-These instructions are for those using Windows and Internet Explorer. For those using Foxfire or some other browser and/or operating system you are on your own.

Orv -

If you scroll down from the top on those that are too wide, you can usually tell which photo is causing the problem. A polite PM to that person will generally get it fixed.

I'm guilty, as I have a large screen and can't usually tell with I messed up others. Please don't hesitate to tell me and I'll make a concious effort to limit to 600 pixs as Glenn states. I tried to change my screen to 640 pixels to test it, but it will only go down to 800.

Sometimes a url that is posted is wide enough to cause scrolling too.

The guidelines for pictures are no bigger than 640 x 480 in size and 60kb in file size although we allow up to 90kb. When we see a picture that doesnt meet guidelines we fix it or change the picture to a link.

If you see one that is a problem you can email a moderator or administrator and we will try to fix it. Please know we have other lives too so sometimes we cannot fix it right away.

I have my screen set at 800 x 600 because I like the larger print and don't want to squint. I think both Glenn and Brad's graphics are causing me to scroll over just a bit. I usually don't pay much attention if it is only a little bit but it is difficult to read posts when you have to scroll over a couple of inches. We old folks don't have great eyes, you know! LOL

Sue,

I just tested at 800X600, and it was me . It's fixed now.

Check Surge Guard forum, pages 3-5. Page 3 is normal width, pages 4 and 5 are too wide. I checked the pix on these pages and couldn't find one that was too big. Am I missing something?

I'm guilty too! I have DVI 19" LCD at work...loose my mind and post messages in hasily so the net police don't flag me. Feel free to PM me and I will go right back and fix the error's of my ways. I've even caught myself by going back in at home in laptop undocked mode and mentally said "who the heck posted such a wide pic...OH, NO...its me!?"

Glenn, please give another short clinic on how to shorten your url in your post to a "shortcut" name. How to change a "http//:www*.----------- (ad infinitum)" (added "*" to keep this from being a link) to "My pict" or "Surge Protector" or "(any label you want)". This seems to be the main culprit for the "wide screen" effect as of late.

BTW Glenn, I have Firefox. If I figure out how to force the screen in Firefox to manually override this effect of long urls, I'll let you know...

Some forum software will automagically do hyperlinking, but not here.
It needs to be done manually and is pretty involved if you aren't geeky with computers. I personally still refer to a template when I do it.

As far as changing text size in an open browser window (including Firefox), just hold the control key down and scroll your mouse wheel.

Thanks, Bruce, but I don't have a wheel - just use the laptop pad. How do I do that?

*On Edit~ Glenn and a few others here have a simple way of shortening a url, and I can't remeber what it was. Wrote it down somewhere...

[ url="PATH"]What you want it to say[ /url]

Remove the space in front of the first url, and the space in front of the /url at the end. The PATH is the address of the link (i.e. www...)

The laptop I'm not so sure, I think you'll need to use Glenn's method if you don't use a mouse with the scroll wheel. That's easy too, just not as handy to do on the fly.

Thanks, Bruce. Just remembered the shortcut...

Vendor Map
(Remove the *'s to make it an active link)

Instead of http://www.frvta.org/downloads/SuperShowMap2007.pdf

you will get Vendor Map

for the same link, and you will eliminate these wide pages. Thanks, Glenn!

An additional tool to shorten URLs can be found at http://tinyurl.com

Any URL will be shortened into a directly accessible link.

Fixed. The urls were too long and caused scrolling.
My screen is wide so I do not see scrolling.
Thank you for pointing these out.

No. It is still scrolling. Wonder what it is? I even edited HOTRs post and that didn't do a thing. Sometimes I can NOT find the cause. Just keep looking I guess.
