Spring Trip / Gallup, NM to Cedar City Utah

Has anyone made the run from Gallup to Cedar City on US 191 to US 89?

We were going to go late April - May time frame. US 89 looked UN-straight on the map. Think there's enough elevation to create weather that time of year?

Going from highway 89 to Cedar City thru Cedar Breaks Nat.Mon., I think you may hit elevations of 10,000 or 11,000 ft. On the mountain the average highs in April are like 40 and lows of 26. Couldn't find info on the road elevation and temp for sure tho. You may be able to find a different route in that area that is lower, but I am guessing you will be over 6-8000 ft so definite snow possibility.

Rt 89 is a 2 lane road with passing lanes and climbing lanes. I have used this for several trips from northern Utah to the Grand Canyon. 89A has a few more twists and turns and travel will be a bit slower. Late April to May could be challenging if you were to take rt 14 from 89 over to Cedar city. There is at least one steep grade of 8% with a 10K ft summit. So you could possibly see snow on the ground. Also could be still falling that time of year. We have well over 100% of normal snow here already in all areas of the state. Another route to take would be taking rt 389 out of Kanab then south through Colorado to get around that mountain range to get you to Cedar City. You would end up in St. George then from there north on I-15 to Cedar city. I have been on that drive from Kanab to Colorado city then to St. George. No snow or steep grades. Camp sites in Page Az. by Lake Powell. Also Kanab has cg as well.

Safe Travels on your trip to Cedar City! Keith

Thank you both for great food for thought - we'll take it all into account during planning.

I haven't been that way in a long while, so I may be wrong. I thought that 89 and 191 both run north/south . We took the 191 from Gallup NM to Arches (Just south of I-70 and that 89 ran north from Flagstaff AZ to Zion Park UT. Anyway they are all good state route's and they have fuel station's with room to fit into. Really beautiful area's for photography. Have lot of fun.
