I used to back my set onto a door or into a parking spot when I was at UPS. it takes awhile to learn but in winter with lots of ice and snow its easier than unhooking and parking them one at a time. Plus its kinda fun

Backing that boat behind the 5th wheel is actually not that hard, it just takes practice, practice, practice. What's impressive in the video is that it's night time on a narrow street and very close quarters. What Larry L did at UPS is much more impressive, as he is actually backing 3 trailers at once (2 28' trailers and a converter gear, which basically is a 6-8' trailer used to connect the two pups together. I was in the LTL freight industry for nearly 40 years and while quite a few of us could back a pup and a converter gear wherever we wanted to, I only witnessed a set of pups being backed into a door twice, and they probably took more time than splitting the set would have.

I think that's partly why most drivers didn't try to back a set into a door. It sometimes took more time and other drivers were waiting to get by and getting paid by the hour the bosses didn't like us spending any more time than needed. I worked nights mostly so I didn't have an audience and I learned the process back in the 70's when wages weren't a factor and the yard I was using was to rough to move the convertor gear by hand. Now days before I retired it was easier on my old body to leave them hooked up when I could especially in the snow. Thanks for the comment. I worked with a few drivers in the system that could back 2 almost easier than most can back 1. A friend of mine in Utah backs doubles and a second dolly up to build a set of triples quite regularly and makes it look easy. Not me. Anyway not to take away from the subject at hand that was an impressive backing job especially at night .

The most important part was taking his time. Too often people get into a rush and aggravate mistakes rather than make small incremental changes to correct a situation. Once you start overcorrecting from the last mistake... things get messy quickly.

Just a curious question. Why didn't he unhook the 5th-wheel and boat and just back the boat in first with the truck, and then the trailer?

my god man, my hat is off to you.
i have been a class A driver for over 35 years, and i can not back up a set in a open area. let alone on a corner into a tight space. with a curb, and at night.
