2nd A/C advice
Am interested with installing a 2nd ac in the bedroom of my 3600re and want some advice.
Question #1 What brand? Carrier, Dometic, Coleman?
#2 Low profile or standard? Don't want to spend the extra dollars if I don't have to. Also most of my travel at the current time is along major highways.
#3 13,500 or 15,000 unit? I usually camp at campgrounds with 50 amp service but am considering tailgating at Auburn once or twice in the fall.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Tony

I bought the duotherm 13.5 as a second. I considered getting a 15K to use incase of 1st unit failure. Sales at Camping World recommended the 13.5 for usage in 30 amp situations.

#1, which ever gives you the best deal.
#2, same as above.
#3, 13.5 is plenty for the bedroom...we put a small fan on the steps to blow some of the cold bedroom air into the rest of the rig.

1. We went with a Dometic 13,500btu. Plenty enough for the bedroom. We bought a direct flow model and not ducted. We also use a fan on ocassion to help cool down LR area.
2. We, also, use most major highways and at first, I was concerned about the added height, but in three years have had no problems. I do use the truckers Atlas to check clearances on the roads I plan on being on.
3. I think you will find the 13,500 is enough for the BR and to supplement the LR AC.

Spend a little extra and get the low profile...............I, as most, generally travel interstates but there is always that one occasion that whoops..........crunch, there goes the roof AC. Believe me, I did it in my previous RV...a class A that was not as high as my current fiver. Do not add height if you can avoid it. From experience JMHO

We had them put on the same as it would come from the factory which was a Dometic 13.5 direct vent. it works great and you need both when it is really hot.

I saw a class A motorhome crunch his front A/C (standard profile) in Ocean Lakes Campground, Myrtle Beach, SC last year. He was pulling across a vacant campsite and a tree limb got it. It was completely destroyed. I believe it would have gotten a low profile too though.

I just did an eyeball measurement on my front AC. I think it it gets hit, both of my vent covers will get it too.

Tony, we reside in Florida or at least originated from there and had the 2nd A/C installed by the dealer when we purchased the rig. It was our choice to get the Carrier low profile 13.5 not ducted. It is 7 1/2 inches in height. Not sure if they still are manufactured. The next low profile is the Dometic at 9 or 9 1/2 inches in height. I think the 13.5 BTU unit is sufficient.
Do your homework and decide what is best for you. I really think either of the above would do well for your needs. Good Luck.

Carrier is no longer making air conditioners for RV's. We are going with the Dometic low profile.

I agree with Illapah. I installed a standard 13500 dometic. If it comes off then so do my vent cover.I have measured and I am not over 13'. I believer most interstates are 14' plus.
Two seven foot poles in pickup goes together, whenever in doub, check the height.

I did not know that Carrier quite making RV AC's, being a Carrier AC retiree (2d career) I would have advised you to get the Duo-Therm, best RV AC out there. Low profile won't gain you a lot, with a front AC you will be about 13'3" to 13'6", depending on truck height, etc. Even with a low profile you will be at 13' plus, not exactly a low profile rig to start with, so stay on main roads and get a low clearence guide. I have one for my MicroSoft Streets and Trips.

If you have ever crunched your A/C (we have) you will always be paranoid of adding any height to your RV. Be aware, clearanced are not always what they say they are and your rigs height is not always what the specs sa they are.

I hate Carrier is getting out of the RV business. I have been highly pleased with the 7 inch tall low profile unit I put on my camper. It performs great.
