50 amp Power Cord Adapter & Progressive EMS-HW50C

We are hardwiring a 50 amp power cord in our shop where we park our Montana. Where can we find a twist lock connector to put on a power cord to hook up the RV?

We're also adding a Progressive EMS-HW50C. If we should ever have to use a 50 to 30 amp adapter, how will that affect operation of the EMS-HW50C, or can that be done?

I did the full RV Park 30 50 and duplex outlet pedestal route. Ran a dedicated pair of circuits and plug in just like I am at an RV park.

Hi Brian,

The EMS will work fine with a 50amp to 30amp pigtail, I do it all the time. The only thing the pigtail does is tie the two 50amp main lines in the trailer to the one 30amp feed in the pigtail. You will be limited to a total amp draw of 30amps because the 30amp outlet will be protected by a 30amp breaker. The EMS will not have a clue what is it connected to, as long as it sees the correct wiring and voltage it is happy. It has no problem with the two hot sides tied to the same source.

A note or two on installing the EMS. First, there is a VERY slight hum when the trailer is connected to electricity so consider that when mounting the EMS. A few people have found that noticeable, however we don't. Second the backside of the EMS can get quit warm, I recommend mounting it with 1/2" spacer board at each end. Both of the items are a result of one of components inside the EMS itself. Neither of these is a problem or safety concern, but I though you might want to be aware of them.

Rather than installing a 50amp drop cord, you could consider installing a 50amp RV outlet and use your existing RV's power cord. That way you can avoid the cost of the 4 conductor 6AWG service cable (@ $3-4/ft). The cost of the 50amp outlet and box should be about the same or less than the cost of a 50amp twist lock connector with retaining ring, something similar to a Marinco 6364CRN. Either option will require a dual circuit 50amp breaker in an appropriate service box.

The disclaimer - If you are not knowledgable with electricity or have no experience installing high voltage / high current circuits, please contract with an electrician to do this work. A mis-wired connector at this voltage and current can cause significant damage to a connected device and can be a shock risk up to and including deadly.

Brian and Kathy-- We built a separate home for our Montana and put in both a separately wired 50 amp and a 30 amp outlet so we could hook up the unit with the anaconda to either one of them. Regular for the 50 amp and use a pigtail for the 30 amp. Paul and Jan Kelpe park their unit in our building also WHEN THEY ARE AROUND that is! We both can hook our units up and keep the power to each of the units. My advise would be as Dave(Starmaster) stated and to install an outlet on a dedicated circuit of it's own and you can use the anaconda to plug in the unit and not have to purchase a twist lock connector and have a cord laying around or hanging on a hook or bracket somewhere. I also use the portable EMS on the outlets and have no problems with that.

We are afraid that one day we will get off without our power cord if we don't get this one fixed up. We want to keep one in the RV and have one plugged in at home. Thanks for the posts.

Brian-- Two things: 1. You won't leave without the anaconda if you have to unplug it and put it in either the basement or in the bed of the truck either before you hookup or just after you hookup. 2. Put it on your check list of leaving--"MAKE SURE ANACONDA IS LOADED AND ON BOARD!" No problems then!

About a year ago I had a friend that damaged his the cheapest one I could find was $125!!!

Yup, I've made a couple of my own dog bones that weren't available commercially and the connectors were high. I agree with Rondo also, the only way I could leave the Anaconda is to drive off with it still plugged in. I'm capable of many mistakes but hopefully not one that bad.

Rondo, when is the rally and where will it be? We won't be able to attend the rally but depending on when and where, we might stop by to say hi. We will be spending the night in Nebraska City on July 2.
