Surge protectors

We are thinking about getting a surge protector for our Montana. Recommendations? Worth the $300+ price tag?

Absolutely worth the money. Progressive makes a great product. We have used a Progressive for the past six years.

Progressive a great product and worth the money. Protection against bad pedestals in some parks. Experienced a bad pedestal once and saved me from extensive damage.

A good surge protector is cheap insurance.

X2 on the Progressive units. I had occasion to call them a couple of years ago with some technical questions. I got very good service from their knowledgeable staff. I have their built-in 50 amp unit with the remote display. I considered a portable unit, but was concerned about theft and weather.

By the way, I had a huge customer service problem with Surge Guard (the Company).

Add me to the list of yes on Progressive. I have the hard wired version and never think about it until the Progressive points out a bad pedestal.

I also have the Progressive portable. Saved my unit twice that I know of. Well worth the money.
I have a heavy chain & a master lock that I use to keep the unit from walking away.
Nice thing about the portable is that you plug it in when you first pull up to the site & if any thing is wrong, don't bother hooking up to the box. Move on to a different site. That happened to us once & it saved us extra set-up time.

Another vote for Progressive Industries. It was the very 1st mod I did on our RV when I brought it home. That was 5 years ago. I had to contact their customer service and they are 1st rate. Highly recommended! I have the HW50C hard wired 50 amp unit that also provides 30 and 15 amp protection.

Just came back from a campground that had a bad circuit breaker at our pedestal. My hard wired Progressive Surge Protector saved all our electronics in the trailer. When the campground owner came by with his multi-meter and said that there was nothing wrong, I told him exactly what was wrong because my remote display identified the problem.

The Progressive is a great unit just make sure the portable hangs up and down on the pedestal. If it is flat it will get water contaminated.

I had one of the others for several years and when it failed it caught on fire. I am glad it was a portable and not one of the hard wired units inside the trailer.

I use a Progressive portable unit. I can check a pedestal before even backing in (or pulling into) a spot. Also, if it fails, it's a whole lot easier to send it back for a replacement unit than a built in would be. It is secured to the umbilical cord with chain and lock.

It's like any insurance. You always question the worth of it. Until it saves you. Then the questions end.

I've been using the portable Surge Gard for 5 years and it's saved us many times. The negatives on this make is it's quite heavy and I believe much more expensive than the Progressive. When it eventually packs it in I'll be going to a built in Progressive.

Another vote for the Progressive. Ours failed last fall and had to send it in for repairs. Best part was it cost me NOTHING except to mail it to them! Excellent customer service also!!

I bought the progressive 50 one based on what I read from folks here. Only used it once but figure better safe than sorry.

Sorry about getting a little off-topic, but that is an awesome TV, SteveC. While you comment on weight, I can't imagine YOU'VE got any issues with that beast.

I do have the Surge Protector. I got it as a retirement gigt. If I had it to do over again I'd go for something that also boost voltage for a brownout. Now those can get expensive but still less than what it might cause when your other electronics get taken out.

Another one with a Progressive Inline Surge Protector. Nine years ago, we were the first to camp in a state park campground loop after extensive rennovations. Plugged in our RV, heard a loud pop and hissing sound, then fire. Melted our plug to the electrical unit and burned our cord about half length towards the RV. Nothing inside was damaged. The wiring was backwards according to the state electrician who also found several camp sites were miswired and breakers missing but no one had camped in them since the rennovation. We're blessed beyond measure.

We never plug in without the surge protector in place.

This is an example of why I chose the portable unit, not the hardwired version. I want that protection outside by the pedestal. Keep the excitement out there, and much, much easier to send it back when it gets it's brains fried!
