Toyota Venza VS Hyundai Santa Fe

As you all know, we have sold our Montana and truck and it is time to buy another vehicle. We haven't bought a car in over 20 years, been driving trucks and vans. We are looking at a mid size SUV so we will have some room to travel in and yet not be too big and guzzle the $5.00 gas that is coming. We have looked at them all and have narrowed it down to a 2012 Toyota Venza or a Hyundai Santa Fe.

I am looking for someone who has some experience with either of these two vehicles. We are leaning towards the Venza unless someone can convince me otherwise. I would rather buy American, however I can't find a mid size SUV that suits us. Please don't tell me I am being anti American for looking at the foreign vehicles. Any other comments would be appreciated.

Thanks Phil & Cathy in Casa Grande, AZ

I haven't owned either, but, I do know the Toyota will bring more money at trade in time. For me I'm going to check out the Subaru's. Couple of my buddies own them and love them.

We owned a Sante Fe before trading it in on our truck. It will be the next vehicle I get my wife without question. It has plenty of room, safety features, great warranty, etc., but the main reason is she never had any issues driving in inclement weather i.e. snow.

Hyundai and Kia are virtually the same company, they share R&D and Administrative Functions but still have seperate manufacturing facilities. My wife drives the Kia version of the Santa Fe: the
Sorrento. It has been a really good vehicle over the last 2 years with only one trip back to the dealer for preventative recall to install a shield on the front struts to keep salt spray from deteriorating the coil springs. Most likely that problem would not surface until it was way out of warranty but they were proactive.
It has 3 rows of seats, the last row is reserved for little people only (my grandkids). The second and third row folds to create a lot of space to carry cargo. I have the V6 which does 26 on a trip and 20 around town. I was going to buy a Toyota Highlander until I checked into the projected lease residual values of both. The Toyota was projected at 55% and the Kia Sorrento was 58%. Given the fact that the Highlander was almost $15000.00 more it was a no brainer for me.

Oh and by the way, they are made in Georgia by American Workers with more US supplied part content than Ford. The warranty is 10 Years or 100,000 Miles on the drive train, best in the industry.

We have our 2nd Equinox and love it. Phil, you might want to check the insurance rates on these two vehicles to see if there is much of a rate difference. I remember something about a late model Venza being the number one vehicle to be stolen up here in Canada, replacing the Honda Civic as of late. Not sure about the 2012 models.

My wife has a 2010 Santa Fe v6. We love it. Great ride, great warranty, made in Georgia, Best bang for the buck in mid-sized suv, in our opinion!

The web says the Venza was engineered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, designed in Newport Beach, California and built in Georgetown, Kentucky. Looks like either way you go you're buying American.

Looks like the lines are very blurred at this point! Have a 11 year old Subaru, built in Indiana. Great car. Someday we will buy another.
Good luck with your decision.

Phil I have not owned either one of these two models but one consideration that would weigh heavy on my mind would be resale or trade in value. Toyota would probably win that discussion. I have owned Toyota's and Hyundai's and I took a beating on the trade in of the Hyundai. (Back then they were made in Korea I think)

Thanks everyone for your opinions. Phill, I hadn't given much thought to trade in or resale value. Thanks for the enlightment!!!! I just sure liked the warranty on the Hyundai. I guess alot of other people feel the same way.....I see an awful lot of them on the road..

Phil, good luck on your choice. The Venza is a stylish crossover. I love it but seems to have to vision blockage to it that bothered me. It's a Toyota product and I love their line. Price wise, it seemed high compared to some other brands. Honda has a new crossover as well but not sure of it's name and it too is stylish. I have heard from Chevrolet Equinox owners and their positive opinions (only 2 of them). It is more the suv than a crossover model though. As you know we all have opinions...regards, Dennis
