They say that hindsight is 20/20. Looking back on it now you probably should not have continued to drive it after the failure occured. Some metal shavings, chunks, etc surely made it into the oil system and therefore went thru the crank/rod/cam bearings. Good news is that Ford stepped up with extended warranty. If they did a good job on inspecting the engine and replacing any and all damaged components then you shouldn't worry about it. It'll be fine.
FWIW, my buddy's 2012 6.7 Cummins just dropped 3 of its 4 valves in #6 cylinder. 30K miles on the truck, bone stock. As others said, Cummins and Duramax engines can fail too!

The 6.7 PSD may have it's problems, but seems to be considerably better than the 6.0 or the 6.4.

They all can fail, it is man made equipment.. Just interesting that ford has been through many different engines, yet uses the cummins in their big models...

I have a 2011 F350 diesel and it has been a nice truck so far but I do not have that many miles on it. I have heard of this happening to several other people and Ford replaced the engine. One guy had to put TWO engines in due to the same kind of failure. It is my understandiing that he had an early version of this new engine. Since I had just bought my truck I had hoped that Ford had made the changes necessary to fix this defect.I love my truck but this is a very real concern. This is not somehting that Ford wants out there.

Navistar produced the first diesel engines for Ford, per Ford's specifications. Our company designed the diesel engine emission/durability test cells for Navistar for the Ford engine. Ford does not own Cummins engine. We also have designed almost 100% of the Cummins development/emission test cells, along with Catapillar and DDC. Every engine manufacturer has had a problem engine from time to time and it takes years of experience to develope an engine to get the bugs out. My brother-in-law was on the Duramax team and it was quite an effort and cost to get the bugs out of the Isuzu engine that they bought the rights to.

You probably had a one time issue and Ford stepped up, as they should.
We just bought a truck and only had 2 options. Ford and Ram. Government Motors was not even considered.
We had a 2001 7.3L and I loved it. I wanted to buy a Ford but after driving a F350DRW and then a Ram 3500DRW I went with Ram. Same engine since the 80's, all cast iron, 6 speed, but all that did not matter.
Wife did not like the Ford interior and preferred the Ram Laramie so was a easy decision.

We did not purchase the Ford 6.0 Diesel based on the recommendations of a Ford Diesel tech who told us of the high repair rate on the 6.0 particularly the early models. We do have a 6.4L that has been trouble free and this same tech tells us of the much lower repair rate on the 6.4 and 6.7 Diesels.
Seeing how some of us pull heavy loads screaming up steep grades pulling very high tubro temps I can understand why they fail.

I had a 6.0, loved it and did not have a single problem except the turbo hose clamps. We have a 6.4 now pulling 600+ HP for over 3 years, back tires are the only problem with it. They don't seem to be wearing very well, wonder why?

It occurred to me that I could take out the complete engine if I kept driving it and concluded that this may not be such a bad thing. That was the outcome I wanted from Ford: to replace the complete engine.
I needed to get the rig to a place where the Truck would be repaired and to the area where I could hook up with a transporter to haul my trailer to the beach.

Just going over 26,000 on mine. Less than 3,000 miles pulling Monte, 5,000-6,000 miles pulling lighter construction trailers, and the rest loaded with tools and ladder racks. Not really much of a real diesel motor test yet. My only shop visits to Ford have been for oil changes. MPG keeps going up and I am now staying 17-17.5 town driving, 19 highway without trailers. Last time pulling Monte was over 13mpg but I suspect this fall that could increase to the 14-15 range. Couldn't be happier with this engine, so far.

Ford Roadside service would have also, but I'm sure I would have lost another day which was important to me.

Does he pull a 15000 lb trailer with it any distance?

Not many of the 6.4L or the 6.7L, plenty of people with 6.0L that come in and have us upgrade their engines with the Bulletproof EGR coolers and ARP head studs. I think that we have 10 sets of 6.0L ARP head stud kits and 2 sets of the 6.4L head stud kits.
kab449, not sure how much he pulls a trailer with his truck, but he is an avid outdoorsman. When he got his truck he took off for Montana with his dad and two brothers to go fishing and averaged 18 MPG at 70-75 MPH which we thought wasn't too shabby.
