Joining the ranks of the unemployed
Well, I just found out that I am being laid off after 11 years with my company with 4 more years to go till I was projected to retire. The contract is coming to an end and the government decided that my managerial position is no longer necessary. The work isn't going away, they are just going to add my workload onto another manager in the follow-on contract. Maybe I should consider myself lucky since I haven't been unemployed in 12 years.
The unemployment claims instructions are written in governmentese and will take some time to decipher.
You never quite understand how many people there are out looking for work until you too are also looking. Hopefully I won't become a "99er" ... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99ers
Someone once said "Being unemployed is like being retired without money or benefits" Marvelous ....

Jay, Sorry to hear that. Seems like many companies are downsizing as they are not sure of the future. Don't despair as my son just got hired by a property management company in San Diego after 8 months unemployment. He is an accountant and will be working for a property management company. Many companies will jump at the chance of hiring retired military with management experience. Good luck with the job hunt.

Didn't you have a retirement plan with the co? if you did, isnt that money that was put aside for you your money, or do they keep it for themselves, Isnt there a law against that? did they give you any severance and a golden handshake.
Realy to bad.

It is hard to lose a job. I know, I went thru 4 steel companies in 27 years and only one of them I had enough years in for a small retirement which went to the PBGC. (pension Guarantee corp) The good thing is you were able to retire from your primary career, for which I am one that is thankful for people like you that has served your country for the rest of us, but ,don't worry something will happen to make you glad for the change.

So sorry to hear that. It seems that nowadays no job is secure. Thank goodness you are also retired military like us. We are now fully retired and I remember one time when Jim had a job loss too, we were so thankful that we had health benefits.
Hope this is very short term for you.

I requested a lay off 18 months ago instead of living out of my suitcase, 800 miles from home. At first I was depressed then realized it was a great decision. Just last week they called me back to work and I have an entirely new perspective on work. They will need to meet my requirements. Life has a way of always working out. The best of luck.

Peterson AFB Colorado doing work for Air Force Space Command. We are indeed fortunate to have my Air Force retirement and medical coverage. So many people out there have it so much worse. We are also grateful that we both have our health ... something money can't buy. The bright side is that camping season is just around the corner!
