no hot water 3400rl please help 1st trip
Hello Folks,
We are on our 1st trip and all was well untill I discovered no hot water-well at least to the faucets- the water heater is hot and it is acting as if there is a main hot water valve is shut off allowing cold to feed back. Any one have a clue as to what is happening?

Steve, try the hot water heater by-pass valve in the docking station.

Steve, check to see the bypass valve is turned the right way. If it is shut off, there will be no water in the heater and do NOT use the electric unless it has water.
You will have to look at the water heater lines on it. There is a white valve at the lines going in and out of the heater. Turn the valve straight with the line it is in. If it is at a 90 degree angle, it is off.
Hope this helps.

Check and see if the water bypass is in the bypass mode.

You have the jist of your requirement. 1. do not turn on the hot water heater electric or propane until you are sure you have water in your heater. 2. Base on your comment your trailer is in the "by pass" mode and there is no water in the heater.
You did not state what year you trailer is. That will help giving you more detailed instructions.
Good luck.

Once you get the bypass in the right position don't be surprised if your heater won't fire back up on propane. This happened to me when I purchased our 2005 Cougar. The dealer had winterized it but left the bypass in normal. I rotated the lever thinking it was in bypass and inadvertently shut the water off. The heater tripped the breakers and would not fire off after getting water in the tank. There is a pushpad with a black rubber cover over it on the outside of the water heater. Press on both pads to reset the breaker. Our new Monty has the same breakers and the bypass switch is better marked as to determine what position it is in.

Not sure if I understand your question, but if you have water on the hot side and it is not hot, check the faucet in the convenience center. If the valves are turned on and even thought the quick connect hose is not connected, cold water can mix with the hot water and you will not have hot water at the faucets.
I learned this during our PDI yesterday.

One other thing to try, IF your shower water valves are left on and the shower head is turned off (I have an on off valve on my shower head) you will get cold water out of all hot water taps. Cold lines are the path of least resistance and water will bypass the water heater. Found this out a few days ago (my bad) and we have fulltimed for a while. It about drove me crazy trying to find it. Finally decided to take a cold shower and discovered the head was off.

JimF,
You are too funny, and brave to take a cold shower.

I'd first check the bypass as others suggested. If that doesn't fix it or the bypass was not in bypass position, then you probably need to replace the check valve on the water tank. I think it's on the outgoing side. Last time I bought one of these valves it cost around five bucks.
I think the valve is on the hot/outgoing side. The valve screws into the water heater fitting. Then the water line screws onto the checkvalve. I think there valve you need is male-male, if I recall. Your RV dealer should have them in stock. Take the water heater brand and model number as there are different thread sizes for these check valves.

I got a PM from Steve saying he found the problem. Seems as there was a shut off valve in the cabinets by the water heater. That must be a mod that the previous owner did because I looked everywhere in the cabinet by my water heater and seen no valve installed.

Thanks Everyone,
Found the culprit in a cabinet by the Water Heater. There was a valve barely within reach(I'm vertical challenged) at the coldwater inlet. Should have known better, been in the plbg business over 35yrs as a plbr and currently working for a wholesaler, again thanks to everyone. I plan to check my element soon as the lp did go to reset. Steve
By the way the rest of our trip went wonderfull, ready to go again.
