Full Timers Insurance

We are trying to get the house sold and hope to be full time in our 3400RL by June or July. Our insurance agent is still doing research. They initially told us they did not think we could insure it unless we kept it in one spot all the time. What are some of you full timers doing for insurance and what is the range we should expect to pay?

04/23/13: Progressive it is. After getting quotes from everyone on our Monte, vehicles, commercial trailers, boat, and contractor insurance, it was impossible to bundle with one company. Some companies will not insure a 38' boat and some won't insure full-time in the 5er. Progressive would do about everything but was too high on vehicles. They did offer great coverage at a good price on the Monte though, so they got that policy and everything else had to stay the same.

Your going to have to do some serious research. We ended up with Blue Sky: http://www.blueskyrvinsurance.com. That doesn't make them the right company for you, but it's where we ended up. Miller was also a good lead as was Good Sam. The biggest thing that we were looking for is someone who's insuring our rig for replacement value not book value. If I loose my home I want it replaced. With replacement value, in theory, you couldn't get the full replacement value the same day you drive it off the lot let alone 6 years later.

Many of the tier 1 providers offer full timers insurance coverage. I personally went through Nationwide as I've had them for the past 20 years. Rates will depend on how much coverage you add, what type of endorsements you select, personal property value, storage coverage, roadside service coverage, are you going to use ACV or Agreed Value, etc... You will probably want to ask your current insurance company what they offer, and then shop around to compare. My suggestion - buy as much coverage as you possible can. All too often I talk with policy holders who are under insured and end up upside down in their payoff. In the big picture - insurance is cheap. It only takes one accident to wipe out an entire lifetime of saving/investing/planning for retirement or full time living. You've worked hard your entire life, protect it!

I have my insurance through this agent:

Miguel Guerrero | Sales Representative | PoliSeek Insurance
p. 866 520-7335, Ext. 75292 | f. 866-930-7335 | e. mguerrero@poliseek.com
https://www.poliseek.com/sales/miguel_guerrero

Give him a call and mention my name, Orville Schinke. It may get you a reduced rate -- can't hurt to try. Seriously, he wrote me a policy four years ago and I've been happy with it.

Thanks for all the information. The house sold immediately (3.5 days) and we close in 36 days! We have to start checking these insurance issues out now. Probably start with quotes from Blue Sky and Progressive. May drop a call to State Farm since their corporate offices are nearby. Thanks again.

Just a word of caution. With selling your home wherever your new address is will make a difference on insurance rates and state you are permanently addressed to.

We have been using a broker since 2004. They have connections with the major companies and are very familiar with full timer situations. It is Farm and City Ins Services. 800-331-1520 or online at www.rvadvantage.com They are GOOD folks and work hard to save you money and get you a good policy. We have had a claim and were taken care of very fast with easy process.

We have our full time insurance with Progressive. They had the best rates and most coverage. We also put our tow vehicle with them, so they will tow both vehicles together in case of a breakdown.

We do have our vehicles with Progressive but use Blue Sky for the full timers. Our rig was a 2010 when we bought it in 2011 so Progressive would insure it for replacement value despite the fact that we bought it new. We have Coach Net so we don't have to worry about towing everything.

We had National Interstate for the past ten years, covering our Montana and fulltimer's insurance. There is no need to stay in one place but they do want to know the "garaging address." Your legal residence address, in other words. For us, that's our address at Alternative Resources in South Dakota. I think that's so they can base the rate on a location.

A couple of months ago our renewal notice showed a sizable increase in premium. I checked with our agent and found that company had increased premiums pretty much across the board. So we switched to Allied, one of the Nationwide companies.

In February of this year we paid $839.34 for one year's coverage, including fulltimer's insurance. Our rig is as shown in my signature.

For reference, National Interstate paid our one and only claim for damage caused by a blowout. They gave me no difficulties. I had to provide pictures and put them in touch with the repair facility but other than that it was simple.

By the way, fulltimer's insurance is nothing more than liability coverage for situations not covered by the vehicle insurance. It's very similar to renter's liability coverage. And it's not expensive.

We went with Foremost Insurance Company of Grand Rapids MI. We have been satisfied with them...insured the Montana. Have the vehicles with La Mars, IA.

Steve, you will love Allied/Nationwide. I've been with them for the past 20 years and have nothing but superior service. I have them for my full timers coverage along with the truck and boat. All in, I got the best rates and coverage with Nationwide.

Dave (Montana Sky), that's great to hear. We also put our truck and car with Allied to get the best possible rate. They were good about including the two things I did not want to give up by changing insurers.

One was our disappearing deductible. They gave us the three-years' credit on that so our deductible starts out at $200 for this year even though it's $500 deductible.

Second is we originally had the full replacement coverage where if our rig is totaled within the first five model years then they buy us an equivalent rig at today's prices. Since we're past that five model years now, our coverage was that they give us our original purchase price if the rig is totaled.

That's where we were with National Interstate. Allied agreed, in writing, to move us to their policy with both this and the disappearing decutible status intact and they put it in writing. I'm impressed with the company so far. I hope we never have a claim but I'm comfortable they'll be easy to work with if we do.
