Highway 89 Utah

We want to travel from Hurricane, Utah near I15 to Arizona border on rte 89. Is this doable with a 38 ft fifth wheel? Then from the border to rt 40.

Did you mean highway 59? 89 is 50 miles away? But as to 89 - it is fine to travel while towing. Also, won't you have to go thru Zion or Bryce to go east? There are tunnels that require you to be led thru by police/rangers.

Tunnel going into Zion from east will NOT accomodate a rig that size. Just sayin - -

Carol, I'm not sure what the limit is on the Zion tunnel but I do think the 38' would work. But you have to wait to be escorted through the tunnel and you have to pay for the privilege. When we were in the area several years ago it was $10 or maybe $20 and maybe a half hour wait. They have you go right down the center line.

Per the official web pages for Zion National Park many of our rigs are too long to use the tunnel.

Prohibited Vehicles
Vehicles over 13 feet 1 inch tall, Semi-trucks, vehicles carrying hazardous materials, vehicles weighing more than 50,000 pounds, single vehicles over 40 feet long, combined vehicles over 50 feet long. All Bicycles. Pedestrians.

Current fee per the same page is $15.00.

As Mrs. CountryGuy pointed out, your trailer height may too high, we need 13'9" for ours, and the combined length of your trailer and pick-up will also be too long.

And yes, they do take a tape measure out and measure it, at least at the east entrance. With our previous 30' long travel trailer we were within ˝" of the limit in width and length!

Sad that one is not necessarily warned about this until one is right at the park entrance, since if you don't qualify for passage, it a long way to circumnavigate the park, including backtracking.

Also, the switchbacks from the west tunnel exit to the valley floor are about as tight as I'd ever want to travel. I was okay with the 30' long travel trailer, but with the bigger Montana I'd be very leery.

I can vouch for this. This past Spring it was $15 for a two-way trip and there is plenty of notice now before you get to the eastern park entrance. There are signs now as you approach the park with pull-outs so you can verify your RVs length and height. We did not have to wait for an excort either. They just made it a one-way tunnel for all vehicles. VERY COOL TUNNEL!
