Do you treat your water?

Reading Dave's post about his water heater and scale problems of others, I am posting a link to a site that sells water treatment systems. I am not endorsing them, and if a company sells stuff, the information may be slanted and a little 'Puffed up', so do your own research. I see they sell magnets to treat water... what's up with that?? They even address it in the description with question.
That said, I have, and always had have a water softener for our rig, recharge with table sale at under .50 a box, cheap to do. I see now they have a larger capacity, larger diameter, same height that they have offered. Being in the 'Pipes' business, I believe in them.
I remember cutting out a section of copper pipe in a hotel, it was 3" copper, you couldn't get a pencil in there where the water would flow.
You can see the Blue spun Fiberglass filters outside RV's when you travel. Many of you have particulate filters, nice, but does nothing for the scale. I installed a RO system for our drinking water in the RV, after having one in the Casa here, I won't drink any other water as a rule.
Another thing to spend your kid's inheritance on I guess

We don't treat(soften) our water at this point but it looks like it could use some consideration. Perhaps thus far we have not spent much time in areas where hard water was such a concern as we are now learning. As for drinking water we BUY distilled water and have for the last 25 years.

If we were full timers, I would most likely go the reverse osmosis route as it seems to be the best available. As part time campers, we have the particle filter and use bottled water for drinking.

I should probably add that R.O. water should be routed directly to a dedicated faucet, with a small holding/pressure tank. The R.O. system wastes a lot of water in the filter process, a R.O. system should not feed the entire water holding system.
When at a RV park, it would be prudent to store a bunch of water from the R.O. system in preparation to Boondocking.
The water softener does treat the entire water supply, and will ease the water heater tank chemical build-up. (And feels great in the shower)

The benefit of a water softener is more than just softening the water. They also remove a lot of the iron issues from the water. I was apalled by the water quality at a campground in indiana when we stayed there to do a couple of rv plant tours. And they also can remove some things that aren't healthy. Always use it after that experience. Magnets...I seem to remember the claim that they "aligned" the mineral content so that buildup in pipes didn't. Think I'll stick with the sofener. There is real benefit to correction of pH by use of another tank or two with appropriate chemicals which also required an injection pump to do the small additions to the water flow in real time. This was a system that we used at our house in maryland very near the chesapeake bay...but this isn't practical in an rv unless maybe you are in a prevost (space and bucks to support the addition). We use an RO system to treat our water. We got it from the RV Water Filter store. It uses double membrane.

We are all over the country so we encounter many different types of water. We do use a filter system but that is about it.

I use a cheap blue RV water filter that I generally get at Walmart. Change it out every month or two and that's about it. Everything runs though it. We drink bottled water and make our coffee with bottled water. I don't want to freak anyone out or make them physically sick, but I sometimes will still drink straight out of a garden hose, and often times not a "white" garden hose. Sorry, but if I am washing my truck or Montana and get thirsty it just seems natural.

I don't treat my water. We aren't gone long enough to use much more than a tank full. Our well water is so good that the water heater in our old home place lasted over 60 years when we took it out it was still good with almost no slag in the bottom of the tank. It was a 110 volt model and a family with 7 kids ran out of water too soon.

Ozz-- We use a whole house water filter prior to it going into water softener that we purchase at the Fall Rally two years ago. Works great and nothing better than soft water for the showers. We usually carry along a case of two of bottled water but do drink the softened water too.

We use an RV water softener mounted on a custom stand with a particulate filter and a charcoal filter in line. We do not treat our water or filter it here in BC nor do we in Washington or Oregon. When we arrive in Yuma and the RV park we stay in, we do filter and soften the water. The filters are changed once per month.

One thing about living in either the Pacific Northwest or British Columbia we have some of the best water anywhere, our City water has won many awards for it's taste and quality and it is only the last 2 years that it has even been chlorinated.
When we are not using the Montana the water heater is drained and the anode rod removed. We flush it at least a couple of times a year and will not leave what is fondly known as water from Arizona in there except when using the unit.

We have never had any problems with any of our water heaters rusting over many years of camping.

We have a dual filter system in our trailer and all the components came from the Water Filter Store. The first filter is a 1 micron spun cotton that gets the dirt/rust out and the second one is a carbon block that takes care of any smells or micro organisms. Works wonderful with little reduction in water pressure. Here's a link to how I installed mine....

Really nice install job, I wish my final products looked as neat, you have a great eye for detail.
That was funny how the two filter housings looked different!
