Travel help needed

Hello,
Looking at the maps, from I-25 coming North from Cheyenne to 20/18, East/North East 20 to Lusk, then 18 to Newcastle, 16 to Custer.

How are the roads, anything I need to know on this route?
Thanks in advance.

Jim, we've done parts of those roads with no problem. They're all US highways or Interstate so shouldn't be a problem. The Mountain West Directory has no advisories at all for that route. Enjoy the trip.

Ozz, we just did the Newcastle to Custer on 16 route, it was fine. Most of it is single lane, with paved shoulders, There is ONE section, look at a map, it is very wiggly/squiggly, that has no paved shoulder, it is narrow, hilly, windy, narrow, AND DOABLE!!!! Speed limit about 35 down to 10, no limits on the length of tow and trailer, so you can do it, just do the speed limits and practice your mountain driving skills. Really, lots of MOCers said we could, they were right, we did it, and so did MynaBird and HoboBob, just a day or so later.

Please bring good weather, it has rained here just about every day, and continues to do so, mornings beautiful, but, the storm clouds have been building every day starting about noonish. The other day we hear boomers and rumbling for well over 5 hours, almost no rain that day. Another day, almost monsoon type rains. No wonder it is green here!!

Thank you folks!
We don't think the trend will change, rain in the forecast. But everywhere else we want to go around there has rain coming also. Bummer.
It's 72 here and a light cool breeze. Probably should stay, but time to go. The 8th anyway.
I'm going to look for that steak in Lusk!

Your route is doable. Another route you might consider, and one I like better, is North on US. 85 through Lusk to Mule Creek Junction, then on East to Hot Springs, SD, then North on Hwy 79 toward Rapind City. South of Rapid City go West to Custer.

We like this route for the reasons that at Hot Springs the Mammoth Cave exibits, etc, are worth an over night stay and the highways are better.

Ozz, we took about the same route from Hill City to Thermopolis a few years ago, no problems. We took 18 from Hill City, Custer, Edgemont to 20. We saw lots of buffalo while driving through Wind Cave SP. We love that area, will go back soon.
