465W and 70W Indianapolis,IN

Will try this route to get wife and I down to TX. from MI. 69 thru MI. and IN. to 465 West and then on to 70 west to 57S in IL. Is this a good route or are their times when the traffic is heavy? This will save about 130 miles off my trip.

We have not traveled I-57 but use 465 and 70 all the time. Like all big cities Indianapolis traffic can be bad during rush hour but the rest of the time it's a piece of cake. We prefer going down the east side of Indy and across the bottom before meeting I-70. There is a Flying J just beore 70

I use Microsoft Street and Trips to plan my routes. It does a good job of finding the fastest route. It has another great feature in that you can can "Search on Live Search," for RV PARK or Campground and it will list all the parks or campground for any current view of the map. Great little tool for around 30 bucks at any SAM's.

I also use the "Motor Carriers Road Atlas," by Rand McNalley to check overpass heights.

Here's what Microsoft Street and Trips says to take: (Costs based on 10 MPG at $3.50 a gallon of Diesel)

There WAs a lot of construction around the airport a couple of months ago...might be a good idea to check it out although we squeezed the 3400 through without a problem.

We do basically the same route, US 12 to Coldwater, jump on 69 South to Indianapolis.

We tend to take the east side of the 465 around Indy, jump on the I 70 and head west to Effingham.

At Effingham take 57 south into Missouri, somewhere it turns into 55. Just west of Memphis, get on the I 40 and head towards Little Rock.

From there, we have taken several routes, one was via Stuttgart Arkansas, very scenic ride, slowed us down and worth every minute!!!

Have done the I 35 south too, one year we stayed on the east side of Dallas, NEVER again, don't recall name of that campground, but they won't see our $$ again, have continued I 35 to Austin and San Antonio and then into the RGV.

Have also taken route to Corpus Christi, and then into the Valley.

But, generally speaking the route till we get to I 40 is the same.

They redid 57 and 55 about 18 months ago, our trip down last year was much smoother and enjoyable. Thank you Illinois and Missouri!

Oh, Rich, thanks for that tidbit about the airport, will check that out!

As stated earlier, stay away from the morning rush hour and the evening rush hour. The I69/I465 interchange is a real mess during the rush hours. The I70 rebuild project downtown has completed and this has improved the traffic flow for both downtown I70 but also the eastside I465 to the south loop for I465.

I believe taking I69 to I465 and take the west I465 leg on the northside of Indy to I70 may be a little shorter than the eastside leg. Though you will miss the Flying J that is located on the soutside I465 at US37 (the truck stop center of Indy). Again staying away from the rush hour times (7a-8a approx)& (4p-6p approx) for the run.

We live in Greenwood on the southside of Indy and I drive the I465 loop to the northside of Indy every day.

According to Street Atlas the east route is 1.8 miles shorter, I think the west side can be a little less busy but for some reason I like the other way, plus that puts me by Flying J

Driving from Wisconsin I take 57 all the time. I pick it up right out of Chicago. As of Oct. 2007 It was clear of construction and a very nice ride. I also use this route to Texas every year with no problems the last few years.

I drive the west side I465 at Indy every day. There is some construction at the 38th st interchange that during rush hour slows things a bit but usually you keep moving. The Construction out by the airport on I70 in not much of a factor. There are plenty of truck stops west of Indy and a Flying J at Effingham IL. before you get on I57.

Ditto on that Flying J in Effingham. Lakeside rv park in Effingham is a very nice park, reasonably priced with nice owners

Thanks everyone for your help on the route info. Last year was our first trip down to the RGV and we went from 69 to 94 to Chicago and then over to 57 and down. I beleive the route down to Indy will save us around 100 miles. I am not concerned about fuel stops as I carry 136 gallons. Last year we started out a little late and stayed at a little park in Arcola, IL. which is about 60 miles north of Effingham,IL. The park is in the little burg and it is hard to figure out when you get their in the dark. No one in the office, put your money in the envelope put it in the door slot. Just have electric. We are going to try to make it to Caruthersville, Missouri and stay at the Casino Aztar RV Park. It is a year around park with open showers and restrooms, if it is to cold to use the 5vr facilities. If you get a players card for free they give you a discount on camping. The park is just off 55 and has plenty of signs pointing the way.
