Needing new wheels too? !!!!!!!!!!

I'm looking to up grade my tires on my 08, 4 slide, 11400lb dry weight 5th wheel camper. My wheels have 3500lb max load stamped on the back side. Going from ST 235/80R16 E 3520lb, to Goodyear G614 LT235/85R16 3750lb. I am told by a salesman at Belle Tire, who talked to his wheel manufacturer, that I would need to upgrade my wheels to a weight rating of 3750lb, when I go from E's to G's. I personnly havent seen where anyone has had to buy new wheels when making this change.

When I upgraded I bought new steel rims to handle the 3750# requirement. Got them from a local trailer shop for $52.00 each. The spare was already rated at 3750.

Weight and air pressure at the two things you need to check on your existing wheels. If they are rated at 80 lbs then you will need to upgrade because the G614 are 110 lbs tires to handle the weight.

Yep, that's why it is so frustrating if you want to upgrade the tires (to the G614s) - you have to do the wheels too on the older units (not sure when the cutoff is). The newer models, even though they have Marathons, at least have the 3750 wheels. My theory is they know so many people are changing tires because they know the Marathons are inadequate, that the "least" they could do was take a little sting out of the upgrade cost and make it just the tires and not wheels and tires that have to be replaced.

You don't have to go to the 614's to get the peace of mind you crave. Many folks in your situation, on the forum, have put good LT tires on their rig with equally good success.

That's what I did although my rims are rated for 110psi. See signature for the tires I bought. Very happy with them.

I agree re the LT tires. Have been running them for years with no blowouts. The 110 PSI tires do require the heavier rim.

Jim, you don't have any info about your rig in your signature. That may help to know what the specifics of your 5th wheel are such as year, model (ex: 2008 3400rl), etc., when others read your post to help with your inquiry.

Some wheels are stamped 110 PSI on the inside some are not depending on the year of the rig.

I've learned that a reputable tire dealer will NOT put higher rated tires on a lower rated wheel (I think it's the law, too but don't know for sure). They'll require that the wheel get re-certified, usually by the wheel manufacturer to be done right. Just slapping a new sticker on the wheel won't cut it. So you might as well get new wheels or do something else that's legal.

I am also considering upgrading to the G614s and have verified with Tredit that our TR6 rims have been a much debated topic, but are only rated for 80 lbs or less. Tredit has stepped up and offered MOC members a reduced price for replacement rims rated at 3750 @ 110 PSI. If you're interested, email them for details.
