First Major Mishap In the Monty
Over 8,000 miles this trip with only a few minor problems, but Yesterday, when we pulled into Laughlin, NV we had a problem. First let me say we have my mother on this trip. We took her back East to see the relatives and just enjoy the country. She has had a great time. One thing we did do for her was get a wheel chair to make it easy on her when we stopped and visited different areas. Well the wheel chair was kept between the dinning table and the couch just under the single overhead cabinet. All the other cabinets where strapped shut, but this one you can not strap. That is the scenario.
When Carolyn went in to put out the slides while setting up here at the AVI Casino RV park, she saw a nightmare. The cabinet door had bounced open and a bottle of Red wine fell out. It hit the wheel chair and shattered on the couch and carpet. Last night was spent treating the carpet and removing the stains that covered the area under the table and in front of the entertainment center (The slides where in when this happened so it hit both sides). We got the stains out but lost the wine.
After 8,000 miles and this being our only major event I feel great about my Monty.

Glad it was just property damage, it was nice of you to take your mom on the trip.
See if you can get that $400.00 back I left there....

When I was replacing the temporary garbage bag ties with bungees this weekend for the cabinet handles, I thought about the possibility of strapping from the single cabinet handle onto the adjacent double one. Granted there would still be some movement potential, but I wonder if there would be enough tension to keep the single cabinet doors shut?? Might have to try that since I don't want to go the children's safety latch route. Of course the easy solution with the wine is to transport it in a cabinet that is strapped (but I am sure you have already agreed to that). Sorry about the cleaning duties.

Bingo, Wine is now in bottom cabinet. I also am going to the bungee cord, from the single cabinet door to the far side of the double cabinet.
Ozz, Sorry we just added $200 to your $400 here. Maybe next time they will give us a discount. Oh! speaking of discounts, when we first got here they tried to put us in a site that we could not open the slides without touching the person's rig next to us. We had them move us. They then put us in one their LARGE rig sites, now we have room to grow, but it is $5.00 more. When we went back and extended our stay another night the discount the $5.00 for both night, Nice of them huh.

jretz, we have the 3400 and we have three, single door cabinets. The one you are talking about we have my baseball caps in and the two on either end of the superslide has soft goods only in them, just in case. Sorry you had to discover this the hard way and glad you were able to get the stains out. I would much rather have a "clean up" problem as compared to a "Mechanical problem, such as the dreaded "shackle problem". Safe travels....

Glad to hear you were able to get the stains out, that must have been a shocking sight. We have added extra catches to problem doors & drawers and that has worked fine. Don't have to mess with the bungees, etc.

The kitchen chair storage seats make a nice storage for wine bottles.
That was so very nice of you to bring your mother along for the trip. I bet she enjoyed it.

Jim & Carolyn, Sorry you had a mess. I would love to take my mother on a Montana adventure.
Dusty, the chairs would be a good place for the wine to ride. I put mine inbetween the couch cushions.

Dusty, I had originally thought to put the bottles in the chairs but I was worried they would brake there, from rolling around. As Carolyn says I am Male Challenged.

I am interested as I consider red wine to be a staple. Did you use hydrogen peroxide mixed with dish detergent to take out the stain? I hear this is the miracle mixture but, since I hold on to my glass like my life depended on it I haven't needed to give it a try.

As soon as we found the problem I remembered, from my hazy college days, that club soda would help so I told Carolyn to soak the area in club soda. While she was drenching the carpet I ran to the store and got some "Folex" Instant Carpet Spot Remover. This stuff works wonders, Used it several times to clean carpet spots, as I have seen it do in the past it did great. Carolyn had to admit that even with my Male Challengedness I do sometimes have good ideas.

Jim, Old "CLEAN" tube socks make great protectors for glass. I do not drink out of plastic so we have "glass" glasses in the kitchen. When we travel we place them in "Old clean socks" and they ride great. Perhaps the wine in the sock and then in the chairs would ride great. Just a thought.....

I am no longer allowed to make any inside storage decisions in the Monty. I don't understand it, one mistake and now I'm restricted. I am now told where to put it and that is were it goes.

I'm trying to figure out where to put a wine rack that will hold a case as we are wine drinkers. Right now i just have it in the cardboard box it came in and in the closit up stairs.
If anybody has installed a wine rack somewhere I sure would like to hear about it.

Almost the same thing happened on our maiden voyage of our 2955RL. We had placed a bottle of red wine given to me at my retirement party in the pantry. We were going to use it to christen eh Monty. After driving over some Missouri Ozark curvey roads we opened the Monty to find the wine broken on the floor. Spent about 45 minutes using water to get most of it out of the carpet. Janette used peroxide and was able to remove it all from the capet. We now have a bar across the pantry drawers when we travel and keep the wine down low.

Jim, remind me to show you my wine storage in my chair seats when we meet in Q. I can carry 8 bottles of wine in 2 chairs without worring about them breaking.

A little of topic, but we lived in Kuwait for 2-years and got a monthly "Tea" ration (adult beverages). Any spillage was considered alcohol abuse!

We are interested in the idea of a wine rack, also. Anybody have any ideas.
