Steel Valve Stems on Big Sky
I was checking this weekend and it appears that the valve stems on our Big Sky are steel. Short of taking the wheel apart, how can I tell for sure. It sure looked like it was a steel valve stem. Does anyone know if there is a difference between regular Montana and Big Sky valve stems? Need the steel valve stems for our TPMS monitor.

Ron,
Grab the end and try and wiggle it. If it moves to the edge then I bet is it rubber at the rim. I remember some valve stems had a metal sleeve over the outer edge.
Let us know what you find.

I had my dealer check with the factory for the one I just ordered (3150rl)for the same reason. They told him they were the metal valve stems. I hope they were correct.

John, they sure seemed to be steel. It's not just a cover. It's sitting outside, so when I head to work I'll give it a wiggle.

Ron,
I hope you are right. The next question is will the sensors screw on properly. Is it long enough. After loosing a rubber valve stem I would pull at least one tire and have it checked at a tire shop to verify it is steal and "bolt" down. Don't forget to check your spare tire too.

Ron, When we put our Pressure Pro monitors on our Big Sky they leaked and we used teflon tape to stop this... After having a blowout on the original tire we changed to the F rated Carlisle and had the stems changed too... Since that time, we have not used teflon and have not lost any air. I am guessing that the original are not steel but you can use the teflon if they are not.. It works well.

Definitely steel. Helen, we replaced our Carlisles the second big trip. The valve stems do not move at all. John - not sure yet about the spare. TPMS should be here this week.

Adelmoll,I just talked to a Cooper dealer about the LT235/85R16 tires and he was telling me about the new Carlile with heatshield technoligy.Said they been selling them long enough for much feed back but so no problems.I know in the past they weren't to reliable.At the E rating anyway.What are your thoughts on the F rated, would you recomend them? Thanks for any feed back you have. Mike

On our Montana from the factory it came with the marabombs and rubber valve stems, when we put the 14Ply on the dealear said they should be steel. I would think that if the trailer came from the factory with the 14 Ply that should have the steel already. I am also thinking about the TPMS for our outfit, been reading alot of post on them, better to catch a tire when it is going down than tear up the side of it..............Ron

When I had the new tires mounted on mine, the dealer said that any tire with over 40psi should have steel valve stems. There are a few different kinds. Some are stainless and you can't mistake them, and others are brass with a rubber sleeve over them. I had no trouble at all installing the TPMS sensors on them.
