50A to 30A service

My new 3580RL Montana has a 50A service. I want to use a 30A power line instead of the heavy 50A line. Will this set up work ok?

From the RV - 50A locking to 30A adapter - 30A 25ft extension cord - 30A to 50A adapter - 50a Surge Guard - 50A to 30A adapter to the 30A park service post. Lots of plugs but will it work ok?

Your unit is designed for 50 amps- When we are forced to use 30 amps, we must be careful with our current useage or we trip breakers- Can't use ac and micro at same time- JHMO- Don

As Don indicated it should work fine. You do have to watch your electrical loads so you aren't always tripping a breaker. We don't even carry the heavy 50A cord. Enjoy. Dennis

Frank, why not move the surge protector up and plug the Monty cord into it, then the 50 to 30 adapter from the surge protector to your 30 amp cord. I try to keep the number of connections to a minimum. Even tho they are heavy, if I have a fairly long run to the power pole, I'll use my 50 amp cable and 50 amp extension cord, my surge guard then the 50 to 30 dog bone. Helps cut down on line loss. Just my 5 cents worth.

Not a problem.
I carry a 50 amp power cord and also a (much lighter weight) yellow Marinco 30 amp cord with a 50 amp connector on the trailer end. If I do not need AC, then I will use the 30 amp cord. And some RV parks we go to only have 30 amp service.

I know all RV parks have 30A power post and most also have 50A power post. Do all the post with a 50A power outlet also have a 30A power outlet on them?

Frank, thats exactly the way I connect my 30A cord and 50A surge protector to the monty and to the power supply and I haven't had any problems.

I don't think I have ever stayed at a park with 50 amp outlets that did not have a 30 amp and 20 amp outlet beside it. But I have heard others tell of some that had only a 50 and 20 and did not have the 30.

I don’t know about all the adapters and surge controls you’ve mentioned but I use a 30 amp all the time when plugged in at the stick house. I only have one A/c and I can run everything including the washer/dryer on 30 without a problem. However when I start adding heaters or a heavy pull on top of everything else then breakers will start popping. Haven’t had a problem with the washer/dryer and A/C while at the house. When camping once last summer I was on a bad socket and burnt the plug, which had to be replaced. If you have the proper adapters you shouldn’t have any problem as long as you keep the load down. I do use the 50 amp service now when available!

personal choice of course but we have 50amp service and we use it.Even have 50 amp here at the Stick house. Execpt for the lighter cord you only pay for what you use. We do have a 30 amp cord with us but rarely have used it. I did not think the 50 amp cord was that difficult to handle.

If they don't have 50amp service, we don't go there! As to your question, as others have indicated, power consumption is your problem...if you use anything beyond your refer and hot water heater, watch the breakers start to trip...or at least that has been our experience.

Our old Class C ran on 30A only. Had the same refer. Hot water was propane only; maybe just throw that breaker and run it on propane only? We could run the AC, microwave and refer with only 30A, no problem.

Unless you have a second AC or washer/dryer I can't see why you'd need the full 50A service. Unless that hot water tank is drawing heavily (and that can be fixed).

Good practice says to keep the number of plugs to a minimum; each one is a potential source of problems. I agree with mhs that you should run the 50A cord to the surge protector, then connect it to the adapter and plug it into the power post.
