Electric slideouts

Just picked up a 2011 Montana High Country 313RE with 4 electric slides. Dinette/Easy chair slide seems to load the electric motor going in and out almost grinding to a halt but does keep moving. Also it has started to jerk going in and out. It moves 1 second and then stops 1 second, then moves 1 second and then stops 1 second. Any recommendations or ideas? The other 3 slides seem to move OK with a constant load on the electric motors. This my first experience with electric motors. My 2003 3255RL had hydraulic slides.

I have the 318RE. I only have three slides but the living room door side and the living room/kitchen slides both move slow but smooth without any stops or jerking. I'm no expert but I think something probably needs adjusting. Sorry I am not more help.

Are the electric slides the cable type or is Keystone giving into Lippert and using the Swintek track system?
Sounds like your dealer needs to make some adjustments and check clearances.

I would take it to a service center and have it checked

On the high country, they are cable driven. They are adjustable. Seek a professional is my advice.

Thanks for the information. Will take it to service. Seems like to slides "lug" the electric motors. The owners manual alludes to the fact that the electric motors may slow near stop even if battery is plugged into shore power. Is that because of low voltage from batteries or since they are direct coupled with no release (like a transmission) or no resettable fuse to give up or just out of alignment? Just curious for your ideas.

It appears the bedroom slide (or living room on the 3750) on many or all the newest models are cable driven. At least the four (3900, 3402, 3750 (which has always had cable slides) and a 3582?) on the local dealers lot all have cables up front.

I am watching cable slides as I have one and it is being repaired now for a frayed cable. Not something you would expect when it has been opened/closed (and any one cable is only used for one direction of movement) less than 60 times.

Carl our 2012 - 3402RL does not have cables on any of the slides, the bedroom slide is small and the hydraulic ram can be hidden under the bed out of sight. On yours the very large bed/laundry slide I suspect they must use them because they cannot hide the mechanisms from view up there. You are not the only one on these forums to have had the same problem with the cable on that model.

I suspect there may be several reasons for a slide to go in or out in a jerky motion, improper fit in opening, binding somewhere either on the slide or cables, perhaps even a voltage/motor issue. If the slide is binding perhaps additional torque is needed from the motor to get it moving but not clear whatever is causing the binding so it continues to build enough torque on the cable to move it a bit at a time. I much prefer the hydraulic system, but understand why it is not applicable in all slides.

FYI, My 2014 3150RL has a cable system on the bedroom slide which is just the bed. The 2 slides in the rear are hydraulic ram operated.

I have no literature on either system. Does any one have a link or a brand name for the cable system?

Thanks Jim

Yup Frank, it sure does. I am one of the lucky ones I guess.

The cable slide system is a "BAL Accu-Slide™ System". I have a PDF of the "Service Manual" which I picked up from somewhere. I can email it to you if you want it. Just PM or email me your address.

I can tell you from experience to keep a cordless drill onboard and charged if you have this cable system. Twice I had to use the drill and the flexible adapter they provide to manually open the front living room slide. It only takes a little movement to free it enough for the motor to finish the task. When I close it I try not to hold the button after it stops but I think it kinda jams at closing and is to much for the motor to overcome. I'm hoping it loosens up, but may need to have it adjusted if it gets worse. The drill and flex adapter also work to close the the cable slides if something fails and I suspect may even fit the hydraulic pump override for the rest of the slides and levelers if the pump fails.

Any ideas why they had all hydraulic in some and hydraulic and cable in some newer models? Cost would be my guess. They used cable for a long time, seems they should have all the bugs out of the system. My 3580RL is a real late 2011 (Made one week before they called them 2012's)and it is all hydraulic.

Cost would be my guess also. Disappearing features like sewer boom, remote controls, and hydraulic slides are likely tradeoffs for something (the cynic in me would say profit).

I have read the install manuals, service manuals and it is obvious to me this is a less expensive system. However, BAL developed it in 2005 and the bugs should be out of it by now. It does appear that it requires a bit of training to install it, but a owner only has to tidy up the cable tension adjustments after using it a few times.

My slide is working smoother after a few times of in and out, but I do need to back off the cable tension after reading all the manuals.

The bed slide in my 2014 3150 has a huge amount of storage under it. Of course, the wife has it full of her stuff. So, the cable thing in mine looks like it will be a good thing.

The fact the OP is having slow moving slides, he might want to check out the different motor options. There are several different ones for slides of different sizes. He might have a motor sized for a smaller slide.

Jim

Our 2016 HC 305RL has 3 frayed cables on slides. Looks like they are rubbing the frame. Have you had other frayed cable issues?

My 3440RL goes in for electric slide problem next week. My dealer called Norco who makes the parts and they said they are sending an "updated" motor/gearbox assembly. I sure hope it fixes our problem, I NEVER liked the cable slide!!

Had same issue with our 3160. Dealer wanted us to drive unit, with bedroom slide stuck in open position, to their shop for repair. We contacted Keystone customer service and they walked us thru process to manually retract slide. Once at dealer found that electric motor and gears were shot. Luckily we have an extended service contract so only had to pay the deductable for repairs. In talking with the tech who did the repairs, this is becoming a common occurrence for Keystone products.
