1990 Chevy 454 1-ton
I had to aquire a pickup really fast since to pull Miss Monty with to the lake. We purchased a pontoon boat a couple of weeks ago and we were in need of a second pickup. It has a lot of miles on it but the guy I purchased from is a maintance freak. If it sits in one spot for a month it has to go to the dealer to be checked before he will drive it. The only thing I am worried about is being able to keep enough gas in the tank to get it to the lake with this 454 engine. Has anyone pulled with this old of a truck before? Is there anything I should watch closely? I trust the truck mechanically because it runs better than our 1998 Chevy 1 ton with half the miles of this new(old) truck.
Thanks

I towed a 30' travel trailer with a '92 454 3/4 ton with 4:10 gears. It's not the newer Vortec fuel injection like your 98, so mileage probably 8-12mpg unless it has deeper gears, then mileage will be less.
If its an automatic, you should do fine. The manual transmissions were POS back then. Mine melted down in the middle of Utah as it could not take the torque or heat.

I have had friends and family with this era of 454 ... stout engine ... tendancy (as with most big blocks of this time) to run warm ... expect 6 mpg max pulling anything of size. Ya know what they say about high miles ... they always run their best before she _____ Once again, not pulling any punches ... Dieselguy

I know Diesel Guy...I had my heart set on the 97-99 F-350 7.3 powerstroke. I am a ford man but this time I didn't win. One of my horse breeding buddies made me too good of a deal to pass up. I only had a week to find a truck for our next trip.

I had two 454s. Pass anything except a gas station.

Never a truer statement. I had an '82 6.2L diesel that I swapped over to a 454. I never pulled an RV, just a 25 cargo trailer. It seemed to get the same mileage with or without the trailer.
