Balancing

We just bought our 3720 and ordered the 614 tire option. As always the manufacturer and dealer didn't balance these expensive tires. Yesterday I had them balanced at my favourite garage and 1 of the four was not balanceable in the conventional way, so they switched it with the spare. All the tires were out considerably until they were balanced. If you have not had your tires bal.,I think it would be a good thing for better tire mileage and for a smoother ride for the trailer. IMHO

Made sure the dealer had ours balanced when we purchased the Monte also. I would not accept the Trailer Kings that came on the unit and would not take the Monte off the lot until the tires were changed over to G614's. I asked that they be balanced and metal stems put on. I also asked to see the receipt from the tire shop that mounted and balanced them also since the dealer does not mount tires in their shop at least that's what I was told anyway! LOL That's why I asked for the receipt on the mount and balance. I'd be contacting Goodyear since you stated that one of the tires was not able to be balanced. Something is wrong there! See you in Goshen!

If you have aluminum wheels, you have to have a hub centric balancer. A spindle balance will not work because center holes aren't perfectly in center of wheel

To help with the balancing, I installed the Centramatics Balancers. Never know when a hub, axle and associated parts are not balanced also. At least now nothing is opened or moved on trips. It might take awhile ( tire mileage) before I know for sure if they work. May put them on the TV soon.

Balancing - Has anyone added the Dyna Beads to their tires when they bought them, instead of getting them balanced?

After market rims (all RV rims) need to be balanced using Lug Centerct balancing. Not hub Centerct balancing. If your tire shop tryed to do hub Centerct balancing that is why they had problems. I would get them rebalanced using the proper technique.

Wayne, I meant to say say lug centric balancing vs hub centric. Another senior moment. Getting old sucks!

So I went to the site and watched the video. This method of balancing looks good, but expensive. Approx. how much is the equipment worth?

Lug centric is the correct way to balance an aluminum rim. I will bet dollars to doughnuts the unbalance-able tire will be doable with the correct balance technique. You should also balance all the rest as they are incorrectly balanced also.

Here is an explanation. Notice any similarity to your experience???

Just replaced my 6 yr old G-614's.
One of 4 would not balance on 2 very expensive lug centric balancers. The second time at a Goodyear shop. It was replaced on the spot, no question, no discussions. The tire wobble was side to side, not out of round, and the consensus was perhaps crushed in shipping.
The best reason to balance these tires is to possibly save your bearings. You and your belongings will never feel an out of balance trailer tire, and considering that you are towing a brick down the road your gas mileage will not be affected.

Does anyone know if Discount Tire offers this "lug centric" method. They always just mount my wheels on the "cone"...."hub centric". From my truck I cannot tell if Montana is smooth or bouncing!

To be 100% balanced they should be balanced mounted on the hub of the trailer. Yea I'm sure the drum was balanced when new but as they wear the balance will be altered,

Someone asked about Dyna beads. I know several people that use them.
They work. To install them you have to either un-mount tire are use funnel and feed them in through valve stem. Also make sure to install filtered valve stems are the beads will allow air to continue to escape if you ever let air out.
I use a liquid called KTB tire balance fluid. Wingfoot, a tire dealer for over the road truckers is testing it on OTR truckers. Most big motor homes use it. They might not know it but that's what most tire installers use. Look for balancing on your diesel pushers. You won't see many with weights.

I have used the plastic beads. They work fine and balance everything that rotates. Just be sure to buy the correct size bag to match your tire size. About $6-8 per bag, depending on size. Way less than balancing using weights.

When we went to the Mor Ryde IS suspension we did have the tires balanced using the correct method.
