Can you hear me NOW?
The right tool for the right job, that’s what I was told by my Pappy when just a young lad. Correct, for the most part and the saying has served me well through the years.
I think this applies to many facets of life, self protection is one, a person cannot, or should not, fire a shoulder-mounted weapon at a person that has slapped you in the face, I would think a Taser would be the proper response, but, that is just me.
Honking. Now there is a good example of the wrong tool for the job. One would not blast a loud and obnoxious horn at the lady who has not moved upon the light turning Green. After all, it is difficult to time your eyeliner application to the lights timing. It would be dangerous as well to scare her, pointed eyeliner pencil and all. I think a humorous and cartoon-like Beep-Beep, from one of those Roadrunner horns. Actually, when Mel Blanc did the voice for the cartoon, he said “Meep-Meep” but it sounds like Beep-Beep to me. So…I put one on my truck.
The very loud stock Ford truck horn, is useful for finding my truck in the parking lot at 3:00A.M. when I come out of the casino, so I like that. Right tool for the job and all.
Now, here is where it gets a little tricky.
On one of our RV trips to South Texas, we had one of those ‘Moments’ we were in the outside lane, traffic was heavy, had an 18 wheeler to our immediate left and an on-ramp coming up. A lady was speeding on an intercept course with us, cell phone in left hand, cigarette-probably a Marlboro… sharing the hand with the cell phone. She was not going to look until she was in my lane, you could tell. I gave her the Hadley air horn blast, she gave me the finger, cell phone Marlboro and finger, but she did not run into me. Right tool.
That Hadley air horn gave up, so I replaced it with a set of 3 Train Horns (165 DB.) I got to thinking, these are mounted on the left side of the truck, good for the growing Texting-While-driving folks (no danger of sharp objects there) but I really needed an air horn on the right side of the truck, in case we go back to Austin.
So, I put a Grover 1510 ambulance ’Stutter’ horn over there. I really have to be careful when Sue is in the Truck and I honk it, scares the beans out of her, it’s under the truck, right under her seat.
While researching the Grover ambulance horn, I got a hankering for the Dual connected Fire truck horn, made by Grover #1048 and #1056.
So, I installed that set under the truck behind the train horns. The best sound of all are the Fire truck horns.
I thinks it’s fine to have this many horns, but that’s just me.

Perfect!
Now I have something new to add to my bucket list. A road trip with Ozz just to hear his horns.

I used to drive the fire equipment in our annual Carson Valley parade every June. Horns and sirens were always blaring. Then I noticed the kids and animals along the route, especially when we were between buildings, and that was the last time I hit the button.
On the other hand, I have been in a nearly 40 thousand pound tender going code 3 (lights and sirens) in traffic behind a 1 ton dually. The lights, sirens, and a tattoo on the air horn failed to get the driver's attention. I knew when it finally did, though, because the pickup literally jumped into the next lane.
I know pretty much how I'll react, but I never try to predict what the other driver will do, because they won't. Not as much fun, not as satisfying, not as much testosterone or adrenalin involved, but then that's why I drive a big rig, red at that, that tends to command attention all by itself.

You are the man! From one gadget guy to another, I searched your truck mods, thought you would have at least one of these baby's.

I have thought about it on a number of occasions - especially when someone pulls out in front of me. I'd like a set of Nathan air chimes, I just can't justify the cost.

Oh yea, my personal favorite. Life is full of compromises, those 'Train horns' I have were $69.00 if I remember correctly, cheap, but they sound good. E-Bay. A guy needs an air compressor when traveling anyway, get a good Viair, they have rebuilt ones for sale. Or... a 5# bottle of dry nitrogen and a set of compound gages. Cool Beans..
