What to do in a storm?

When "camping" during a heavy storm containing lightning, is it best to unplug the 5er electrical cord from the power pedistal or leave it plugged in? Or does it even matter?

I have never unplugged mine while camping, or when in storage, during a storm. Always plugged in except when on the road.
No different than the stick house. I don't disconnect power at home during a storm. While it is possible a large spike on the line could damage something, it has never happened at home. So I don't worry about it in the trailer either.
I don't have a power management system or surge protector on the trailer. Maybe just lucky.

I wouldn't push my luck like that. Paid the electric company for a whole house surge protector on our stick home in Kansas. During the 20+ years we lived there they had to replace it twice. Have a Progressive EMS for the rig and if I'm plugged in it's on the line. Your results will vary, but since lightning has already struck us twice I'm prepared for the third time. Have a tornado shelter at our RV home base, but that's another set of stories.

I'm with Dick on this one. The very 1st mod I made to my Montana was the HW50C EMS from Progressive Industries. We have way too much $$$ invested in the rig to chance frying it. We leave the shore power plugged in during a storm.

Won't leave home without that surge protector. We use the unit that connects to the CG power post because I really don't want any surge or extra power coming into the unit, just incase it may jump the protector to the rest of the wiring in the unit and into the electronics.

Not to hijack the thread, but I have a Surge Guard installed inside. I got to thinking - what if lightening strikes and the surge guard fuse blows, therebye protecting the rest of the Montana. The surge guard is inside the closet wall, so I wouldn't have ANY power until I rewired it or something.
What do you all say about this???
Thanks.

My surge guard is hard wired under the pantry, in other words I would have to empty my basement, crawl in there, and remove a side panel to get to it. But if it gets fried and I have to re-wire, replace fuses, or replace it then that is okay as long as it protected the rest of my unit's systems.

We have had the PT 50C since day one on our first Montana. the only time we are unplugged from shore power is when we are on the road. Isn't the 5th wheel like a auto with 4 rubber tires on the ground. What would a lightening strike do to a 5th wheel??? BTW we have been struck by lightening three times in S&B's.

Tires are rubber but not the landing gear or jacks. Also think about your water hook up probably a plastic hose. Then think of your cable TV hook up. Lots of ways for it to hit ground.

If you're hooked to cable I would unhook if a storm is coming. Every year a couple of stories about rigs getting fried thru the cable appear. Even though the stick house was protected by a whole house surge protector we still lost our phones and the surge protectors on two computers because the lightning strike came down the phone line. There are many ways to invite unwanted electricity into your home or rig.

I never thought about the tv cable. Thanks for the info. I guess I'll continue to do what I've always done in a bad electrical storm...PRAY!
