Skylight is clear

Hello Group.

The skylight in the shower is clear, as in you can read a book looking thru it. The wife does not like looking at the sky when showering.

Anyone tinted a clear skylight?

Thanks Jim

Why not paint a face on it starring down at her?

On a more helpful note, Lowes or Home Depot sell film you can put on windows, but given the curvature of the plastic, I'm not sure how well it would work.

You can buy and install replacement skylights that are tinted.

Jim, if you remove the inside plastic moulding (several screws) and cover the opening on the top of that with the insulated material some use to protect their dash and other things, it will not only make the wife happy but will keep that hot sunshine from coming in there as well.
Don't try to tape it to the curved clear cap.

Nice easy mod that I did almost right away, I just taped mine in so that I could remove it if I ever wanted to.

These screws are only into paneling so don't over tighten them.

I used auto tint on mine. Just removed the screws, and tint away! It keeps it much cooler in the RV also.

We just went to Walmart and bought a cheap pillow, pulled the inside down, put the pillow, plastic pillow covering and all, in between the plastics and screwed the inside in place. Cuts the light and insulates all at the same time.

I made a gathered curtain that is exactly the width of the skylight after making a rod pocket on either side and making it 2 & 1/2 times the length of the skylight. Put expansion curtain rods in length wise and fit it in skylight. Make with light weight fabric so it won't be too heavy. Filters out light and heat from sun. I leave it up even when traveling. It has never fallen and only remove it to launder it. Have had several see it and they made them one also.

Pull down the inside cover and place 1" bubble wrap in-between the outer lens and the inner lens. You can't see directly out, still have a bit of light to brighten the inside, and the bubble wrap makes the heat transfer almost nonexistent.

we removed the inner lens and covered with decorative wall paper, then a layer of foil. The decorative print is what you see from the shower. With the sky-lite blocked, a vent pillow in the roof vent and bubble wrap behind the window shades ... AND the front A/C running, we hear no outside noise, and first light does not glare into the BR. Very nice for sleeping in, or napping later in the day.

I'm planning on spraying my clear skylight with a light spray of white paint. Just enough to keep most of the sun's rays off and help it last longer.. Heck, It's certainly because I'm concerned about someone seeing me.. If they want to look at this tired old frame.. more power to 'em.

Also going to do the same thing with the fan vents. They also get sun damaged easily.

Jim if you go to an auto parts store, ask for the spray that the car buffs use to spray the rear tail lights to darken them but still leave it light enough for the signal lights to show through. I pulled the inside frame and removed the inner bubble. I then sprayed the inside of the outer bubble or lens and also the top of the inner bubble. This both eliminated the light coming in from the shower to wake us up in the morning and the heat that came in through the dome because it was clear plastic. I believe the can of spray tint was about $6 but don't quote me on that since "oldtimers" has a tendency to creep in every so often! You can order the dark tint outer dome but when I asked our service tech about it, he said if the dome is not broke don't do it because inevitably it will leak and he said he has no idea why! He's done three and they all leaked for some reason after he got done with them.

I painted the outside of ours white. Works great, reflects the heat and still gives light in the shower.

I forget what brand/item I have, but I installed a sort of pull down shade at the edge of the skylight. It extends and has a hook you install on the other side. Sort of like an old fashioned pull down window shade from days past.
It works great - rolled up it lets in light, and extended it is nearly light proof. Makes it great for sleeping in late in the morning.
If anyone needs more info, I think I could look up the details in my files. Oh, it was a little pricey tho - I think maybe $50.

We bought (http://www.carefreeofcolorado.com/ca...&categoryid=34) this for our skylight in the shower. Works great. Close it at night to keep the sunrise out and/or the heat of the day. Rolls up into a little case fastened on the wall. One of the best mods we've done. It's likely the same one that Tom posted about.

We took down the inside bezel with its plastic skylight, and put a towel between the inner and outer panes. Lets a little light through, but softens it and you can't see outside (or in).

We went to the army surplus store, bought a machine gun turret, and had it installed in place of the skylight. If anyone tries to look in our windows my wife can shoot them.

I like using the tinted film like you put on your car windows. I will still be able to see outdoors at the clouds/sun/moon, but it greatly reduces the heat.
