50 Amp Power Adapter

I recently purchased a power adapter (extension?) with the intent of taking the stress off of the trailer connection by having the adapter make a 90 turn out of the trailer connection and turning straight down before attaching the power cable to this extension. Pictured below is what I got and I'm told they couldn't find one that points down. I've seen extensions like this that point straight down on Montana 5th Wheels (recently), but perhaps they were 30 Amp?

Anybody know if one exists that points straight down and where I can get it?

Thanks for any help!

Bill, I bought an adapter like yours for the same reason. The one you have will work fine. I think you can remove the 4 screws on the cover and take it off. Remove a couple more screws on the plug mounting plate and you should be able to rotate the plug on the 5'er 90 degrees counter clock wise. Re attach the plug mount then reinstall the cover. Had to do this on a friends SOB. I imagine the Montana will work the same. Jim

I purchased one of these several years ago, looks exactly like yours, except it hangs down straight. I don't recall where I got it. I would suggest returning it to where you bought it. Look at your straight plug, see where the metal outer contact is on it when plugged in, and go to an RV parts store and find one that will hang properly. Yours could just be defective from manufacturer, as I can't imagine a company making them wrong on purpose, unless the part on your rig is wrong. It looks like yours is 120 degrees out of correct position.

Bill-- Jim has the solution for you to make the adaptor to hang straight down instead of on the side. Apparently the guy that put the power socket on your Monte was in a hurry or had no idea what direction it was suppose to be. Remove the four screws on the holding plate and pull out the socket, rotate it the 90 degrees and reinstall it. Just make sure you disconnect the battery/s and do not have the unit hooked up to power when doing this. I have the same adaptor and it works great with the 50 amp cord hanging off of it straight down to the ground. Let us know how it works! See you in Goshen if not before!

Thanks all for the answers.

I thought maybe my trailer plug might be misaligned or could be corrected by me.

I just wanted to get someone to second my opinion
I'm getting my screwdriver now...

My metal piece in the plug (ground contact) is straight up in my trailer connection. I'll rotate it to make the correction.

Ron,
I have a picture of your adapter and it looks great! I got the idea from you and others at the rally. You can imagine my surprise when my shipment I ordered during our rally lunch visit arrived.

Thanks again all!

Bill

I simply use a bungee cord on the frame to release any stress.

Take the three screws out of the power inlet on the trailer and rotate it. Then replace the screws. Easy peasy.

As your shore cord ages, and with it sticking out straight, the jacket of the cord, right at the housing of the plug will crack due to the weight of the cord hanging, plus, the electrical connection is always under stress with that weight trying to pull the plug sideways in the socket in the trailer. I just leave the adapter connected to the cord all the time, and have done that since I purchased it.

The jacket on mine didn't crack but did pull out of the plug. I think the weight of the cord contributed to one of the conductors working its way out of the lug in the plug. Didn't notice it until I only had power to one half of the unit. That loose lug had arced pretty bad. That was enough to convince me to buy the adapter.

Many folks have had problems with the original pulling away from the plug. Ours faces the sun in Kansas and out west. The black cord can get really hot and pulls on that plug. We use a stronger adapter than the one pictured, but it's made to take that stress off.

Thanks for your recommendations. It's Fixed!

It was very easy. Four outer screws to remove the cover (with plug) from the trailer; then 3 smaller inner screws that attach the plug to the cover. Rotated plug 90 degrees counter-clockwise and
re-assembled plug to cover and then cover to trailer.

It does make the fit much nicer and removes the stress.

Gotta find my next project now...thinking about making that grey water valve work as nice as my black valve since I fixed it before the CPRR.

Jimmy,
I've repaired a number of cords for people because of damage from the strain. I keep my adapter on the cord permanently.

Got mine at camping world. Fortunately my connector was oriented correctly and the adapter hangs straight down. I love my adapter.

My old method was to use the OEM cable that stuck straight out. Over these ten years I had to repair the cable three times, because the strain cause near separation. Fortunately I usually caught it in time to redo the cable. Finally two months ago, I missed the impending proglem and the cable separated. I lost the Microwave, a power strip and a couple bulbs, so I got REAL lucky, the other half of the circuits with the TV, compuer, fridge were NOT affected. It also blew out the campground connecter. Now I use the right angle cable and things look GREAT!

Our OEM plug came apart the first winter we had it in Florida and we went with the adapter.

Bill, where did you get your adapter? I have been searching the internet and cannot find it. I have one that looks like your but the one end is a 30 amp. I had the same problem with you when I installed it and had to turn my trailer receptacle to get it to hang down. Would like to have one for 50 also but can't find it.

I got mine at a RV parts store; Leach Camper Sales in Council Bluffs, IA. It's a CAMCO product; here is a picture of the tag. I will email you a picture of my receipt with all the information and phone number if you want; let me know.

Amazon has them with free Prime shipping. The one with both male and female locking plug connectors is here:
https://www.amazon.com/Camco-55572-L...+degree+adaper

My cord was starting to separate on the first outing. The 90 degree adapter (yes, I had to adjust the RV receptacle) is a winner. You can see it in my Profile picture.
