day/night shades up or down on the road?

I've been told by several people the day/night shades should be full up when on the road to avoid weakening the pleats. Weak pleats would make closing the shades more difficult. Anyone know if this is truly a problem? We are running with ours full up because we just don't know for sure if it would be a problem to leave them down. But I'd rather not have people peering inside when we're at a rest area. I'd rather protect the furniture from the sun when we're on the road, and I'd rather avoid the temperature extremes from cold and hot outside weather, as much as possible. Anyone have thoughts or experience with this?
Thanks.
