There ought to be a tool.....

Any ideas for a tool to change the bayonet style bulbs when they're up in a sconce. My hands are way to big for the job. DW didn't have enough grip. Broke it with pliers and a rag. From there it was on! Putting the new one in wasn't much easier.

Is the light shade fixture glass removeable? Just a thought.

Might just get a very short piece of hose, slightly smaller inside diameter than the outside of the bulb, and attach it to a dowel. We have a couple of cone shaped light fixtures over the kitchen sink area that I will probably have to do the same with.

The hose idea is good. I use a short piece of tygon tubing that you can get at any hardware store. In a pinch you can also use a piece of masking tape and sort of pinch it around the bulb that you want to remove. Then if the bulb isn't in a real tight socket you can push in and twist it out.

If you do bust a bulb, you can sometimes get it out by pressing a piece of or a whole potato onto the broken glass then remove by press/twist or unscrew as may be the case.

That works for screw in bulbs - normally 120V, but he is talking about the bayonet ones that go in a quarter turn. I've retrieved my share from working on cars by using a pair of needle nose pliers. I like the new bulbs that just press in / pull out.

These are the push in type, 906,912,921. I do not see where the sconce comes off. I'll look for a set of old bulb pliers. I might have to modify them, they were made for the 1157 type bulb and worked pretty well. Haven't seen them in a while. Maybe I'll find a set-auction season is just starting here.

You could put some rubber tubing on the tips of needle nose pliers.

Beth and Kevin, you might try these Halogen Bulb Pliers, they look like they might do the trick. Tim

Bayonet base bulbs have a metal pin on each side of the base, ala 1157, etc. Type 912, 921 are not bayonet bases. I have these bulbs in the hanging lights over our kitchen island and haven't figured out IF the glass part of the fixture is removable or not. When I last had to change the bulb in both of these...it was a major pain in the butt. I haven't yet made my bulb remover...but it is basically a piece of large dowel with a hole through the side of the tube near the top, then sliced in half to form two pieces that can slip over the bulb. With pressure on the two side pieces, it should be able to pull out the bulb. The drilled hole forms a cavity in each of the two pieces to caress the bulb. John
