Question Leaving Goshen to Springfield Mo.

When we leave the Rally in Goshen we are heading to Springfield, Mo. and would like to avoid I-80W and all the traffic and tolls as we head west. Looks like only a few initial roads to start with and then more choices as you go. Anyone who has knowledge of the best route please chime in.

Thanks.

A couple years back we left the Fall Rally and headed south on IN-19. We took this south to US-24 then headed west to Interstate 55 which is the Old Route 66. I did this to avoid Interstate 80 south of Chicago which to me is the worst stretch of our trip.

I think I'd take IN-19 south to US -24, to I-55 to US 60. I'd stop in Sikeston, MO for a tossed roll at Lamberts

The only thing I might consider doing differently is using making my way over to and using US31 south instead of IN-19. I have never been on IN-19 but have an aversion to little country roads in the middle of nowhere.

I understand wanting to avoid I-80. They are currently doing construction on the Indiana side (and when aren't they?) and there are pretty good sized back ups almost every day. I don't know when they plan to have it finished.

31, 421 and 41 were all major N/S highways b4 interstates in Indiana - grew up in West Central and delivered seed corn on a 20' tandem truck - there's a lot of good high clearance, scenic roads in Northern Indiana on the major routes. Wished I was up there with Montana gang

Clearance is an issue. Many of our little country roads in Indiana small towns only have 12 foot clearance and will take your air conditioners off. Like I said I don't recall ever driving on IN 19 so I am not too certain of that road but I live in NW Indiana and can think of quite a few routes we just avoid.

Wish I could make it to the rally (it is only about a 80 mile drive for me) but time just does not permit this year.

Option Route

If you want to use the interstates, use US31 south to Indianapolis. This is now all 4 lanes divided highway, with a few stoplights, but not many. Use I465 around the west side of Indianapolis to I70 west to St. Louis, then on to Springfield. There are no worries on heighth.

We travel US31 north frequently to Goshen to visit our son and grandson.

Thanks for the 12 ft reminder. Very critical. Sometimes I guess we get a little too relaxed on the height issue because we nearly always travel interstates and US hwys.

you'll miss a good Rally. Maybe see you there next year.
