I called the service tech at my RV dealer while we were out getting it repaired, and then when I got home, I looked in the Dexter manual that came with all of our manuals. It might be different for you if you do not have the 7,000 pound Dexter axles and Morryde 4100 suspension???

Mine is the same; 7000 & Morryde 4100. I'm asking because 75 ft lb sounded a little high for a 3/8" bolt. However, I called Dexter and they confirmed 70-80 ft lb; so you were correct.

I checked all mine and none of them were close to 75. I did not measure them, but the inside ones were probably only torqued to about 30; the outside a little tighter.

This is the link for the Dexter manual, and on page 67 is the torques for the suspension fasteners. The torque for the u-bolts, the 1/2" U-Bolt, is 70-80 Ft Lbs.

Hi

I posted earlier in this thread about looking at your springs any time you are under the trailer.

Here are a couple of pictures of new trailer spring packs they are not for a Montana but they are very similar.

The bottom one is of a spring with the center bolt broken but the U bolts are still tight

Mel, since it looks like you're rebuilding your suspension, have you thought about switching to the Mor/ryde IS and eliminating all those parts you're replacing? Probably would still run a little more, but might be well worth it.

I have thought about it. We're the 2nd owners of our monty. We bought it from the original owners, a couple in thier 70's. We were able to buy it for about half of the market price. The guy had the front axle replaced about 3 years ago, also in his words he had a wet bolt system installed on the new and old axles. So even though we got a great trailer at a great price, how much more $ do I want to put in it? I've put about $5000 in a new solar system and what I'm having done now will be around $1200 give or take. I've really not had a bumpy or rough ride, all though disc brakes would be great. I'm going to try and post pictures of what I have now it say's Dexter, not sure I can but I'll try. Also my wife and I always buy used RV'S We like it that way. So we will likly use this 5ver until it's wore out.

I was traveling east on I 70 in Colorado pulling me Montana and had just passed Vail Co. and started up the mountain when I noticed the fifth wheel was pulling a little hard. About that time I heard a loud bang and noticed I had blown a tire( Goodyear G 614) Luckily, I found a place to pull off the highway. When I went back to look at the tire, I discovered that my rear axle was cockeyed. Three of my four tires were ruined beyond repair and I was on a mountain in Colorado with traffic rushing by. Good Sams Road Service, of which I have been a member for many years, proved to be not real helpful.I ended having to pull the fifer off the mountain myself. Scary experience.
I later learned that the pin that holds the springs together had snapped off which allowed the springs on the right side to slide back. One axle was going one way while the other was going the other.
I spent a week in Frisco Co. waiting to get repaired enough to haul my rig back to Indiana. So I would advise everyone to check your axles!
I am a new owner of a 2013 Big Sky 3625re. So I was reading through posts last night, as I have done since I bought this unit, came across your post. Now, I am an OCD type sometimes so this morning I hit the drive way under the Montana. Left rear wet bolt nut was finger tight.. or should I say loose.. almost to end of bolt. This unit was purchased new here in my home town. Taken to a storage shed until the PO got his storage built. He said he probably never pulled it 200 miles. I have put more miles on it than him in the last 4months. I am sure glad I seen your post because next time out I may have been on the side of road or worse. I also torqued the U bolts.. all were not to specs. So now my OCD has kicked in to WHAT ELSE WILL I FIND. Thanks and I will keep reading
