bird in the cedar

Like all woodcarvers, I am looking for interesting pieces of wood while hiking or just taking a walk in the woods. the above pictures is of a "Black Capped Chickadee" I happened upon a piece of red cedar other day at Panther Creek SP. 1st pic is after I sawed out the profile with a coping saw, 2nd pic is of the finished product mounted on a piece of the cedar, 3rd pic is of a piece of cedar that the chickadee came from. I love the "natural" finished birds, especially cedar! thanks

TOM, Do you use a dremel or some other kind of small electric tool to assist in getting the wood down enough to work??? If you show up in BRANSON MAY 2008, I will bring you a GREAT BIG CHUNK OF CEDAR!!!!!!

Hemlockusa, If its a pretty big piece of wood (like a 8" or 12" log) I first saw it in 6", 8", 10" chunks, then I use a "very" sharp hachet(very carefully) to square up each chunk. then whatever bird or duck I want to carve, I draw the pattern then transfer it to the block. Then with coping saw, (used to use my bandsaw in the stick house) I saw out the profile(side and top) then with a "roughing out" knife I work it down to where it resembles a bird ot duck. then I use Dremel with carbide or diamond cutter to work it even further. Then comes the knives to work it further and I do most all the feathers with a "detailing" knife (1/2" & 3/4" blade) LOL, I didnt mean to get into detailed speech!! anyways its fun and a great hobby. Thanks
