Suggestions for 06-07 season activities

Maybe the moderators here could put a sticky note on this message so it is not lost in the archives, so that it can be referenced next winter. (Done)

Next year we might suggest:

1.) Logans Road House in McAllen (in the 7000 block of 10th Street, north of Nolana), we hear they have a few meeting rooms that might just fit the bill. The meals are a bit more, but their filet is to die for! And they let you throw the peanut shells on the floor!

2.) Also, if done in January or February a Dolphin Watching Tour out at South Padre Island might be something fun, we have the name of a boat that might just fit the bill for a group of 30 to 40. Don't wait till March to do this, you will not be able to get to the Island for all the Spring Breakers.

3.) For those who have bikes, the pull ferry at Los Ebonos with a bike ride for lunch in Mexico is very popular, and tho we have not done it, even tho we TRIED hard one day, it looks like a lot of fun!

4.) There is nature center in Weslaco that is a 6 acre jewel, for those who have not done so, it is a wonderful place to spend a few hours.

5.) In McAllen there is the International Museum of Art and Science. Have not been there, but it is quite an impressive building and gets good reviews.

6.) In San Juan, the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle National Shrine, we have been told is fabulous and is a must.

7.) Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, another activity that Al and I have not done but that we hear is FAB!!

I am sure there are activities that other MOC Winter Texans have done that could be added to this list. Please add your suggestions!!!!!

All it takes is someone to call and make reservations and then post it here to the forum.

God willing and the creek don't rise, Al and I will see ya next Winter, here in the RGV of Texas!!

Carol & Al

From Bob and Pam:

Border Patrol facility in Harlingen. They have a couple of agents give a talk on the Border Patrol, what they do and how they do it with a picture show and tell, then tour the facility. It was interesting. Afterward we went to lunch at a barbeque joint just down the road about 2 miles or so east of the Border Patrol office.

Thanks you two for a great idea.

Having a Montana get together sounds great. There are 3-6 of us in our Harlingen park. Don't forget the Iwo Jima Menorial on Loop 499 near the airport. The Winter Texan news can announce any events. Bob C

When you visit South Padre Island, bring your bicycles. We stay at Destination South Padre, right across the bridge on the island, I ride from our home there to the Wana Wana beach bar, about 4 miles up the beach, have a beverage there, ride back to Boomerang Billy's beach bar, where they sometimes have a steel drum band, then on past the county campground to The Dolphin Bay Oyster bar, and listen to Bob Marley music from the band there.
I tried riding on the beach one time, THAT is a work out. We love Fish Tacos at Dirty Al's, where the Dolphin watching boats are.

Carol: The Basilica is definitely the place to see on a Sunday. (even if you are not of the faith) We were made welcome. Probably having Mark along had something to do with it as they told us the priest would bless Mark if we stayed around after the service). The band that plays during the service is great. A real "must see".

I have a note to call the border patrol and schedule us in. We will get to the valley in Nov so will try to get a time in Jan or Feb if that sounds good. kim

Another interesting place is the King Aloe Vera farm. They give a guided tour for $5 and tell all about aloe vera. It was very interesting.

A drug store or dentist tour could take a couple of weeks.

OK, we want to pop this up to the top and remind everyone that THIS is for the UPCOMING Winter season, starting November 2006 and carrying over till April 2007 (Or whenever you arrive and whenever you leave! )

There are a number of really great suggestions here, now what we need is someone to volunteer to reserve and organize each activity. (remember, ole Carol retired April 2006). Tis not hard, just takes a little time to reserve a room for a meal at eatery of choice, post the details for all to see, and that is about it.

We usually meet the third Thursday of the month for our meals, pot luck or eatery of choice. Other Thusdays can be good times for some of these other activities. We can do as little or as much as we want, just need a individual to spear head each activity.

See ya in the Valley, 3006 - 2007!!

Carol

In the past the gatherings have been a couples thing, that said, Mary (of Countryfolks) has attended several of the functions when Skip had to work (they work camp). We don't have any rules that I know of, just come along and enjoy!

Hope y'all have a great winter in Texas. We are going to AZ.this year and hope to get back to the Valley the next.I know most people are looking for good eatting places so I will plug one that a couple of real good friends from Minnesota put in last year.It is "Ron And Nancy's Little Italy"located on FM 1015 between Expressway and Business 83.They just got a perfect review from the Health Dept. and awarded 'Top Performer'.I have not been back to the valley since they started it but bet it is good if you like Italian.

Last year (at Keystone's request), we had a gathering at the RGV RV Show.

Now, that did not go exactly as planned, and the
RGV RV show is not likely on anyone's top ten list of RV shows, but at least it is a show, and as long we arrange for some food, what more do we want?

Here is the link to the 2007 show. http://www.rgvparks.com/rvshow.php

Any interest this year?

John and Donna may or may not be here by the time the show is on, as their travel plans changed a bit.

So, if someone could pick a day, time and restaurant, and post here.

A gentle reminder, I am not the tour director this year, so someone needs to volunteer.

Cheers all.
