Maxxis Tires?

Still trying to decide which way to go on tires--currently have 3 x Mission and 1 x Triangle trailer tires on rig and they're about 5 years old so perhaps time to change, especially when I read about blowout problems.
Can get set of 4 Maxxis 8008 trailer tires (ST235/80R16, Load Range E, 10 ply) installed for about $900. Is this a fair price for these tires and are they recommended? Also, do trailer tires need to be balanced on installation?

I recommend they be balanced. Many don't because they can't feel the bouncing and/or they put so few miles on per year that the tires will time out for age before they're damaged beyond use, but bouncing can sure damage the tires.

I don't have the Maxxis knowledge to comment on the price, etc.

barmar, the Maxxis M8008 is the ONLY ST rated tire I will sell or recommend at this time. I have been through many brands from Towmax, to Carlilse and even Goodyear and the Maxxis is the only one I haven't had trouble out of. Yes, as Steve said, have them balanced. If you are getting them from a reputable tire shop, the mounting and balancing should be no extra charge. I think the price is a little high though, my normal everyday price on 4 ( mounted, balanced, disposal of old tires, and sales tax ) is 767.18. I'm not trying to sell them to you, just giving you something to go by.

We put the Maxxis 8008's on our rig last year because of Lonnie B's recommendation. Currently have about 6k miles on them with no problems. One of the things I immediately noticed after putting them on was how much cooler to the touch they were after traveling than the stock Marathons were. I have always balanced my trailer tires. Less wear and tear on the tires and the trailer. I bought them on line from "Gripston.com", but just checked and they don't have them right now. You might want to call them and ask about it. Their number is 800-956-7760. We got 4 tires for $687.36 delivered to our door.

Somewhere I read that the Maxxis tire weighed 43.43 lbs while the Marathon weighs in at 35.4 lbs suggesting the Maxxis is a stronger tire.

I put Maxxis tires on my previous 5er and they were problem free for the three years and 15,000 miles I put on it before I traded up to the Montana last year. The dealer swapped out the China Bombs for Maxxis free of charge before I picked up the Montana and I now have aprox. 4,000 trouble free miles on these. I'm happy with them.
