When that happened to us on our first Montana (a 2001 model) it turned out the screws anchoring one of them to the plywood had pulled out. Any chance yours were pulled loose when you removed them? I'm not sure whether you can get to the underside of the plywood at that point. If so, I'd consider using bolts with washers and nuts on the under side.
Since you pulled them out and mentioned they seem to be jammed, they probably will need to be replaced. I would think you could take one to whatever stores sell them and match up the length, both closed and open. I think you can buy them at auto parts stores. And maybe Home Depot type stores. Not sure about that.
Good luck. When you get this resolved would you post back your solution and where you bought the new rods, if that's what you have to do? It would be helpful to those of us who may have the same problem in the future.
