Slide maintenance?

Are we suppose to lubricate the slides? Ours are getting pretty dirty from gravel road dust.

Pat, I have to do the same thing. Our dealer told us that a good silicone based spray would do the trick. I think there are others to stay away from. More info will be forthcoming here, and I will have an interest in the answers, too.

I assume you are talking about the rubber seals? the gearing needs occassional lube too.

Silicone is good, WD 40 is bad. The silicone is what the lub guys call a 'dry' lubricant, where the WD 40 attracts crud, and should be used to loosen stuck bolts. As a sailor, silicone is the lub of choice.

A little trick the Keystone Service Center showed me. First, you want something that will not attract nor hold dirt. They took what I had purchased at Camping World and sprayed it on a piece of cardboard. The then tossed dirt on it. It stuck. On the other side of the cardboard they sprayed something called TFE 101, or something like that. The dirt did not stick. None. So that's something you could check.

MIMF2, from Lippert, who makes the slide mechanism, says silicone spray is all you need. If a slide gets a little bit jumpy as it moves, you're overdue for lubricating.

Just lube the teeth on the two square bars and shoot some into the gear those teeth mate up with. Do not lube the round chrome bar. Just wipe it down good. That's my understanding, anyhow.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

Ken, that sounds like it might be the same as TFE 101, or very similar. Have you done the dirt test? I might look at Home Depot or Lowe's when I run out of this stuff.
