Rich,

I know exactly what you are talking about. I was very much looking forward to trading my 3400RL in for a 3402RL, but after being inside the bath/bedroom area, I ruled it out. The open concept is lost in the bath area which bled over into the bedroom and created a cramped feeling. Also, the new tub is too narrow for my structure. At the moment I am back to the 3400RL again....this time in a Big Sky edition. Happy shopping Rich, I am sure you will find the right coach for you.

Dave..The 3400 is not much different in terms of space.
Shower different yes..

Chip..It is hard to explain.. a few inches here and there the cabinet at the end of the island is less deep than the one in the 06 3400. Space under the sink is smaller. Drawers in the bedroom dresser are smaller. The tape measure will tell the tale. When comparing the two there is a big difference in how the space is utilized. The 06 3400 has more storage.

The 3402 has the four door fridg. The extra vanity in the John bathroom but it came at a cost to storage space. Helen is at the table figuring out where she will re arrange things and what she will have to leave at home.

No matter how simular some RV's are when you look at them, when you get down to it they can also be very different. A lot has to do to on where you have gotten used to having something stored and now you gotta find a new cabinet for it. The SOB we had before and the 3000rk were exactly the same layout but the 3000rk is 5 foot longer which gave us a whole bunch of additional room. And it does have lots of storage, just not the same cabinets we had before. But one place I did not pay as much attention to was the basement. The basement on the 3000rk is very small compared to a lot of 5ers. But we dealt with it. I think the one cabinet we miss the most was the pull out pantry. We just have to try and remember what cabinet the stuff is in when we look for it now. lol

Another example is the "window dresser. The 06 3400 is 10" deep each drawer is 16" wide and 6.25" deep.

3402 is 10" deep each drawer is 14" long and 5.5 " deep.Does not sound like much but that is a lot of space.

For the average user there is plenty of space but for long timers like us we need every inch.

Rich, that new design bedroom dresser was a disappointment for us when we moved from our 07/3400 to the current 10/3455. Not sure what their reasoning was with the change but we certainly noticed the difference those few inches make. We didn't even notice the difference during the PDI but certainly noticed when packing our stuff away. Sounds like Helen is really on top of this, Keystone needs to be listening more to the consumer when it comes to these subtle changes(We want MORE drawer space, not less).

Helen and her tape measure are dangerous tools and can not be disputed. She was all over that 3402 yesterday for over two hours taking measurements then came home and diagrammed in out 06 3400 on the right side of the paper and 3402 on the left side.

The Island end cabinets 06 3400 15.5" deep 23" wide 3402 10.5 inches deep 24.5 inches wide a loss of 5 " of shelf space. Nothing we have in the 06 shelves will fit in the 3402.

Now you do pick up some inches in other places and some things are the same,

:Oh her spice cabinet in the 06 is 8" by 12" In the 3402 8" by 8" she is not happy. You pick up the 4 door fridge and that is a good thing but give up 15.5" of counter space and the double door cabinet below where she stored ALL her pots and pans.
She is going to be having a long talk with Aram and it is not a good thing to have a long talk with a not happy red headed Irish female..

Maybe Keystone can get rid of that long bath tub and place the neo-angle shower in there like the 3400RL has. Then they could create either an extra deep pantry or build another wardrobe in that area instead... Just another idea of ways to improve the Montana line up. Good luck to the both of you on finding the "right" coach for you.

We are out a lot now and would like a little larger camper. I am reluctant to go to the heavier camper like the 3400.

But we are also comparing space with what we have with a larger camper. They really did well with the storage space on this 3075 even though we would still like more room.

But like you said everything is a give and take.

I would think you could get the Neo-angle sh ower in the Big sky 3402.

They start life out as a 3400. I wo/uld check on that. The large tub is OK for Helen and I.

Rich, I haven't looked at the 3402 and am not that familiar with the 3400 either.
Just spitballing here. Is it possible like you said, because every inch counts, Keystone cut some corners on space like the drawers in the kitchen and a smaller bedroom dresser to help even out the weight differance of the 3402? Maybe the tub in the 3402 is just a little heavier than the shower and with other little changes they made to the new 3402 they needed to change some things to keep the weights right.
Like I said don't know, just wondering. I do hope everything works out for you two.

there is only so much room to work with in a Rv. Was 400 square feet and now 430 square feet. In a S&B if you need more room you just build or buy bigger. In the 3402 and the 3400 the bathroom is larger dues to the 2nd vanity and sink. The 4 door fridge is bigger. The new tub that Montana sky does not like is bigger. The design of the front cap makes the front closet smaller. I have no idea why they made the island end cabinet smaller or why we lost space under the sink.

The 2012 3402 is only 300lbs heavier than the 06 3400. The six point leveling system has to add to the weight.
IMO the issue was to cram all the improvements into the allowed space.

We like the improvements but not the loss of interior storage space. I say again for the average user you will never fill it up. Think of what you would need for 6 months in Florida and you may have a problem.

It will not deter us the improvements outweigh the space loss. Helen will have to cut back... on stuff.

The smaller dresser is a "feature" on all the new units. Coming from an earlier model, the loss of space is appreciable. The DW has already had our cabinet maker over to discuss options and this summer we likely will replace the dresser with something larger and more useful.

Personally, I like Rich's idea of living with less and adapting.

Rich,
I wondered if they changed the tub-it says radius. What did you mean? "The new tub that Montana sky does not like is bigger" Did you see the radius shower?-How does it compare to the residential shower in the regular 3402? My DW and I really like the 3402 plan-(2 sinks). Did you get a total weight with the level up and thermo windows? There is always some give and take with RV's.

I have told the D/W if she'd reduce the number of shoes she takes we'd get another MPG!

You can use that extra MPG with the high fuel prices!

There is no doubt that we have more "stuff" in this thing than we need. Last year I removed 85lbs of tools that I never used and some I did not know how to use.We are going to have to reduce weight by 300 lbs minimum and we should have no problem in doing that. We do not run this 340o at GVWR 15,500 and will not run a new one at GVWR 15,800.

UPDATE....Confirmation this morning via E mail that our 3402 Big Sky was ordered yesterday. with a end of April delivery date. That should work out good as we should be back in Ohio by that time. My guess is we can get it home by perhaps 1st or second week of May depending on how the PDI goes. It does not leave the lot till it is perfect and we are a lot smarter than last time. The fireplace will come out the dealership. One loose wire and there will be hell to pay. PDI took 8 hours on the 06 3400. We would send it back to the factory in a heartbeat if it is a train wreck.

Congrats Rich and Helen! I hope your new Big Sky is everything you hoped it to be. I will be waiting to hear your overall opinion on this new coach as I hope to be ordering my new Big Sky by the end of May.
