I did not realize this thread got revived when they started the new website? But we have been outlaws and driving illegally, whenever we drive thru Kalifornia!. We did two trips last year for about 5,000 miles. We have another one coming up that is 5,000 miles, but we will never be in Kalifornia. Amazing how i can be a criminal in one state, but not in the other 49 states???

The only time you are going to be in trouble is......if you get stopped for a driving violation of some sorts; speed, traffic impairments, etc. I have been driving RV's for 45 years and have yet to be stopped, and up until my last Commiefornia license renewal, ever had the #41 endorsement for 10-15k RV's. Personally, I wouldnt sweat it and just roll the dice, like you have been doing it seems. Also, I havent really checked yet on the web, but think you are a tad too long by 9 inches for a 5th wheel, as thought the length was maximum at 40 ft. Again, roll the dice. I found out on my last purchase that dealers/salepersons dont know crap about the laws or much of anything else dealing with towing. I even had one telling me my 12k hitch was good for pulling 18k!! yeah right....again, keep the speed down to legal limits and no rabbit moves in traffic, lol.

Yep, since my son is a CHP officer, I have been a good boy. Heck, I have not had a ticket in 37 years!! Even though I drive a Viper many times 2-3x times the speed limit, but do it, when no one is around! :-)

There is a legal way to rid your self of this problem, get a LLC in Montana, they will do all the registration work for yo, you have no special license to get and your problems are over, you will be towing a 5th wheel from Montana, thousands of people do it

He's still going to be on a CA DL though and that is where the problem comes in.

Good idea for saving money on the registration and taxes though.

I bought a boat, trailer and a motor in Oregon. Brought home to Ca. They didn't look at anything. Only had to pay taxes on the trailer and boat not the $10,000 motor. Anyway they didn't look at anything

We purchased our Montana from Sierra rv in Reno. We were given by the dealer several forms that went to DMV. There is a calif form that requires a chp officer to fill out. He verifies length, SSN, model, all that stuff, signs the form. Nevada should have collected the taxes at time of sale. Once I made my first and second visit to the DMV, a lot of paperwork went back to Brian Chowanski at Sierra RV and he sent it off with paperwork he obtained from Montana and after 6-8 weeks I had my registration. Brian was so helpful in this process, he took my calls and helped me with the process. Give him a call. Hope this helps. Darrel

Darrel,

Brian is the one that that helped us at Sierra RV. He told us we needed to show up at the Truckee, CA DMV, and they would measure it etc., and take our sales taxes and registration fees, which they did.

Now I remember why I moved from Commiefornia 42 years ago and never looked back.

IN NEVADA, we used to have an R certification for pulling an Rv. We no longer have that.. California must suck...

I would be safe to say that the CHP officer(s) would not know the difference in the law concerning anything over 15k pounds and you would be safe unless you are doing something stupid to get pulled over, and then, even then, might not know nor care. Now if it was a DOT CHP officer, that might be a different story. Here, they look for the 3 axle RV's like toy haulers, etc., as they know they are over the weight and more than likely get stopped just for a license check.
