Plumbers Putty in Kitchen Sink

Hi, I am full timing in a 2013 3000RK. I like to cook a lot so I end up doing dishes a lot. My rig has what looks like plumbers putty used to install the kitchen sink drains.

This putty softens up from the hot water when I wash dishes...and it sticks to my dishes! Once it sticks I can't get it off.

Anyone have any ideas how to remove the putty from my dishes or even how to prevent it from sticking in the first place?

Montana, if you read this, please find some other substance to use in place of the plumbers putty when installing your kitchen sink drains!!!!

Thanks for listening! Other than this we love our new rig!

Plummers putty is commonly used even in your houshold drain and garbage disposal applications. Metal on metal or metal on fiberglass doesn't seal well without some sort of sealer. Under your sinks there should be a large ring on the sink drain that you can tighten up further ... this will press out a bit more of the putty. Take a plastic knife or wood tounge depressor and scrap away the excess. This should solve your issue. I've not had your issue of putty sticking to any dishes, but I have done the above to remove excess putty under the drains.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I too have plumbers putty in the sink drains, and an excessive amount too. I just took a plastic putty knife and scraped the excess off.

Now to get it off your plates, you could try Goof Off, but be sure to scrub your plates after using it.

Real plumbers still use plumbers putty for a reason. Nothing else works as good. The nut may not have been tight enough to squeeze thr extra out. Or you might need to just wipe all of the excess off.

Montana is not using traditional plumbers putty to seal the kitchen drain in their newer models. They have found a substitute product (read cheaper) which oozes out continuously. If only it would stick in place as well as it sticks to your dishes.

The best solution is to remove the drain, clean off the putty, and re-install the drain using real plumbers putty. If you are under warranty, have the dealer do it. Maybe if Keystone gets enough bills for this effort they will quit using this crap.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Carl, I think you hit the nail on the head! After 4 weeks of continual use, it just keeps squeezing out no matter how often I scrape off the excess...it is driving me nuts!

Next time I take the rig in I will definitely ask to have it redone!

Thank you!

In some cases that's the best thing to do when still under warranty. In this case since doing it right isn't hard, I'd ask the dealer how they intended to fix it. If it's not to your liking I'd say thank you I'll fix it myself. In most cases I replace anything RV with Sticks and Bricks parts whenever possible.
