Renege on Charges

I took my Montana into Camping World for some repairs. The next day service guy calls me and gives me the cost to be $1303.15.

I give the OK to do the work.

Well, I it is taking longer than he estimated so we call to check on progress. Now he is tell me the parts they have were wrong, and they have to overnight them, the catch is the cost just increased.

My wife told him no, that they gave us a cost for the repairs.

Now a week has gone by, we call and call only and he will not return our calls.

I am not budging on that cost he quoted. It is not like he said, "We estimate it to be $1300."

What are your thoughts?

Did he give you a written estimate? I would be standing in front of him about now in the store. Bad customer service and a raised voice in front of other customers may go a long way. Just my opinion

Please share what camping world this is so that others can avoid them, and yes, I'd be down there speaking to the manager in person and on the Good Sam forum letting them have it.

This isn't your wanted answer, but unless CW Service Center was the last place on earth open I would have looked elsewhere. I hope you got the quote in writing for documentation during discussion. Knowing CW ... if you deny the ammended bill and get your fiver as it sits, they'll just charge you for what time they have in it done or not.

The problem, of course, is a verbal number given out over the phone with nothing in writing to specifically document the scope of the work. I would try to set up a meeting with the store manager and explain the problem. It could result in anything from giving the original price, to meeting somewhere in the middle, to him standing behind his service guy. If you are not pleased with that, you could post your problem on the Open Roads forum and the Camping World subforum there. When someone post a CW problem there they get a response from the CW customer service rep to contact them off line to discus the issue. Whether that results in resolving such issues I don't know.

I'm not sure but since you (the customer) said "no" when they called back with the news about the wrong parts, then I suspect parts have been returned and your unit is just sitting out in their lot waiting for you to come pick it up. They probably figured they already lost time/money on figuring out your problem and ordering parts, only to be told not to proceed, what is there to really talk about on the phone?

If they would have told me the repairs were going to be $1303.15 and then called back with a higher estimate, I would have at least listened to the higher estimate. Did it change to $1333.15, or was it more like $1700.00?

Based just on what has been revealed in your original post, if I was the manager of that CW I would just ask you to come and get your unit and have it repaired someplace else.

I am with JandC a verbal estimate is just that an estimate and can change. It is not a contract. I think you are a but hard to expect them to do all the work (now free labor) and now a loss to the shop. They could have been working on someone's reg that was waiting to leave on vacation. JMHO

If you read leemedic original post he said they gave him a cost not an estimate. If they give me a cost that is what I expect to pay. If they give me an estimate I realize it can change. Jim

Plus why should cost go up because the dealer received the wrong parts.

I agree, if they quoted the cost to repair an item. that's what I would expect to pay.

CW in Fountain, CO charged me $1700.00 to fix my slide creep issue and NEVER FIXED IT! They kept it 3 months and replaced 2 slide hydraulic rams (this was NOT the correct solution). They pulled the same monkey business by continuously calling me to have me authorize more diagnostic time. They kept throwing parts at it in hopes something would fix it. When I finally got my Montana back, the slide extended on it's own again after 3 days just sitting in the storage lot. When I called them on it they asked me to bring it in again and said there would be no charge for additional diagnostic time. I declined and considered this a very expensive lesson. I have since learned this is a common tactic that CW employs.
Needless to say, CW in Fountain, CO will NEVER work on my Montana again.
If anyone is ever in Colorado Springs, I have found an excellent RV mechanic that diagnosed and FIXED the problem the 1st time (John Godwin of MD4RV - he owns the business - (719) 243-2057)

Sure sorry for the way you were treated by those folks. Great dealers/repair facilities can be hard to find, and thanks for the heads up on the Fountain CW.

When someone tells you something their word is their bond. Don't call me back and tell me it's going to cost more. If it was going to cost less would they call and tell you that? Be serious. When I give someone a price on a job that is the price. If I make more than expected, good. If I loose my a$$ that's my problem. I would tell them where they could stick their estimate and NEVER go back.

This is one way to handle it and certainly one that many including myself might go. A good service facility of any kind, be it RV or automotive will explain why the repair is not going to be what they originally quoted. Not just "the parts are higher". Maybe the wrong part was looked up by the dealer parts person, or the technician didn't ask for the correct part, or the manufacturer has an upgraded part. The bottom line here is the facility representative hasn't explained to leemedic's satisfaction why they are justified in raising the repair estimate. If the facility screwed up in some way by misdiagnosing or some other error on their part, they should step up to the plate. If the error isn't their fault, they should talk with you to come to a resolution that works for both of you. If you walk, your rig isn't fixed, you're out diagnostic fees and they didn't make any money. No body has won. My advise would be to try and work it out with them unless you truly have no further confidence in their ability to fix your issue.

He gave me a cost of $1303.15, not an estimate of $1300-1400. He said, "It is going to cost you $1303.15."

You had better believe if it was warrantee work they would not be increasing the repair cost.
