Lakeside Beach State Park, NY - Montana Owners Club

Having grown up camping in state parks in the Midwest I had no reservations about looking to state parks where we now live in upstate New York. Having just purchased our Mountaineer last year, we looked for someplace close by that we could enjoy. While there are many state parks in upstate New York, we came across a gem in Ontario County. Lakeside Beach State Park is located at the very end of the Ontario State Parkway in Waterport, New York, on Lake Ontario. The name of the park is a slight misnomer as there is no swimming beach at the park. However, the sites are quite accommodating for larger rigs and the scenery is wonderful. A nice breeze blows off Lake Ontario and with trails, playgrounds, and large open fields, there is plenty of room to have an enjoyable stay. The park only has 20AMP service and half the park has wooded sites to keep you out of the sun in the summer. The back part of the campground allows pets; however, all the sites that back up directly to the lake do not allow pets. This is unfortunate for those of us with beautiful rear picture windows. We were there at the end of last summer and again in the fall. The fall foliage was beautiful and this section of New York has hundreds of acres of apple orchards. There is an apple festival weekend in the fall and local marketplaces have live entertainment and activities. With park police on site making regular rounds, we could let the kids go on adventures with no worries.

I will keep this campground in mind. It would be about 250-300 miles from us... can make it easy in a day. Did the park have full hookups? I agree with the no pet by the water.... what type of view did you have out your window??? Hopefully not another camper 3 ft. away. I think of that since we ordered a camper with the rear bay windows - not tht often you get a great view.

Unfortunately, most NY state parks only offer 15 Amp service and no water or sewer. The campsites are very gracious on size as you could easily fit two or three more rigs between them. The view varies by the loop you are in. Some loops are very wooded while others are only partially wooded. Three of the six loops had sites that you could back into and get a terrific view of Lake Ontario.

Have been to Lakeside several times, very spacious and clean, and only an hour away from us.

15 amp is fine, I think. We are having a generator put in our new trailer. Would 15 amp run an air conditioner????

I believe the rating on the A/C is 13 amp. While it is still less than 15, this continuous draw on a 30 or 50 amp to 15 amp adapter will cause the adapter to become very warm or possibly melt. I would recommend not running the A/C off a 15 amp circuit.

I agree Lakeside is a beautiful park. A word of caution there are several approaches to the park that have low bridges. You have to be careful how you get there.

When we bought the 5th wheel and we noticed how HIGH it was we purchased a truckers atlas. It includes low underpasses in it listed by state. When going somewhere we are not familiar with, I always check the book first and adjust the route if necessary. Good for peace of mind!

Yes, the Ontario Parkway has some low bridges, have taken Rte 104 or 490 to get there, coming from the south Rte 98.
