Check your roof

I was on the roof the other day checking all the caulking. Everything looked good but something told me to check real close. The tv antenna is off to the side of the trailer so I knelt down and checked the side facing the edge of the trailer. The antenna is raised off the roof a bit and the caulking they had put around the base had sagged and left 3 gaps along the side. Had I not noticed this, alot of moisture would have entered the roof.

Do you think maybe that you might have driven under some low limbs giving a hard brush to the antenna? Thanks for the heads up.

I will have to go up and look at mine. Bought it in July, 07. The guy doing the PDI said he had personally gone up on the roof and put extra caulking aroung all the roof fixtures just to make sure nothing leaked, but I did not check it myself. Guess it would not be a bad idea to look.

I've found that just putting more caulk on old will not seal. After doing this and going back say 6 months later the new caulk will have a crack around it. With small spots of new caulk around exposed screw, you can easily peel away the new caulk. Don't know the solution but we may need to remove some or all of the old caulk then replace with new. Has anyone had any luck with just applying new over old, maybe I missed a trick in doing it this way?

Illini Trekker,
What kind of caulk are you using on top? You don't want silicone. The best I have found is the Dicor 501 LSW lap sealant. It sticks well, doesn't peel.

Hi Stiles,no I did not hit any trees. You could tell that the caulking had saged. Also glad to hear that Dianna is doing better.

Charlie, I did use the dicor lap sealant. Also Angie & I were in Vegas last week and saw you & Nila at Harrahs carrying your suitcase of money.

Yep I use Dicor Lap, the problem spots are about the size of a quarter that cover those screw heads that are showing. Had to buy a new Winguard antenna a while back removed all the old and applied and Dicor and that worked great. But those small spots I repaired I can peal those up with my fingers?

Bill,
I'm glad you found us there, how were we doing? Actually we're not far away, we're over the hump in Pahrump, home of Sheri's, Chicken Ranch, etc.

We are taking our 2007 Montana 3500RL down to Texas in January. That will be the first long trip in it. The first thing I'll do when we get there is check out the roof.
