Heat ON (or) Heat Off

Wondering if you leave your heat on when you travel South for the Winter. Some folks say the winterize their home and shut off their heat but other say they leave the heat on at a lower temp. Wondering if we have our home winterized (pipes drained, etc. etc) and than decide to have the heat turned off what it will do to the drywall. thanks.

We winterize the house, drain the water lines, run RV pink thru the washer and the dishwasher. Put RV pink in all the drains and the toilets. Drain the hot water heater too.

We turn the heat down to around 45 to 50. I leave some plants home, each year I lose another 2 or 3 of the large ones. But, leave the heat on, cause of the plants and the drywall.

Some say it does not hurt the drywall to get below 45, some say it does. Never did a web search for that, maybe we should??

I feel better thinking that there is a rather even temperature in the house while we are gone. Barring any power outages, that is.

Enjoy your time away from the cooler climes!

Montanaman, you are talking about your stick house, right? No dry wall in the Monty!

I would say the biggest reason to have the heat on is strictly for convience if it's already winterized. If it's not, then I would leave the heat on until reaching warmer temps.

We took it a step further. I computerized the house, including automating HVAC. Based on sensors inside and outside, doors open/closed, etc. Our home maintains a constant 60 degrees when we are gone. Yes, it costs a bit more, but at least no repair bills.

I can also check and change heat, etc. by computer wherever I can get an Internet connection.

Also helps to discourage burglars and the like, as our patterns were learned and with a few anomalies thrown in for good measure, it seems that we are home when various lights go on and off.

We put the thermostat on 55 - 60, turn the whole house water off, leave the phone answering machine on (call on the cell to get messages), stop the mail, have a neighbor pick up the paper (stopping never works), have timers on four lights and a radio set at different times, lock the garage door opener, and tell the neighbors if they see an 18 wheeler backed up to the house to call the police.

Exactly the same steps as CAT320. Insurance dictate that heat must be maintained and the house inspected every two days. The price of being a snowbird is using some natural gas to heat the house slightly. It is worth it just to know the house is protected from extreme cold.
