Power converter over charge protection
We have a2015 HM318RE factory equipped with a WFCO9865 65A power converter. Have not been able to get reply from tech support at Wfco electronics as to whether this unit has over charge protection when battery fully charged. Hope someone can provide some input. Also trying to figure out when my unit is not being used if I should disconnect battery with The cutoff key. I understand the carbon monoxide detector will drain the battery within a days if battery is left on. I do have 50A power on my property when storing so can leave the power on full time. If I do that should I just leave the battery in the on position, or would that cause battery to over charge with the WF9865?
Issue came up this week when the campground lost power and I had a weak battery and discovered I screwed up and had not checked the battery fluid level and several cells were almost dry. Battery seemed almost on fire it was so hot. Lesson learned on that but want to be sure I have the correct and best charging method when I replace the battery. Sorry so long winded here but thanks in advance for any insight. Ken in Florida

If am not mistaken the converters in most newer (higher end )campers have smart charging systems built in. At least 10 years back or more.
I have always left my units plugged in 365 24/7. Never had an issue.
I think if you turn the battery disconnect switch off the batteries will not get a charge from the converter. You can check that with a volt meter.

The converter on our 2010 had multistage charging so yours should also.

I just replaced a WFCO 65amp that burned out on our new camper with a Progressive Industries 9200 series 85 amp. Other than different mounting holes it is a wire for wire exchange.
I got several very bad reviews on the WFCO with one RV repair shop going so far as to say they would not honor their labor warranty if I insisted on WFCO
By comparison got a lot of good reviews about the Progressive Industries brand. Really like that it has remote status light so you can monitor what charge state it is in. It has 4 stages with one being a maintenance “trickle” charge for long term storage.

Intrigued by mtlakejim's input on Progressive Dynamics (not Industries) converter. Appreciate everyone's input. Great reviews overall of the Progressive. Wondering if others have experience with this converter?. The factory Montana is 65 amp and options for Progressive are 60, 70 and 80 amp. Any reason if making a change I would not go with the 80 amp option instead of the 70? Only difference in specs seems to be the input current 13.1 vs 14.9, and I don't fully understand implication of that. Thanks. Ken

The 60, 70, and 80 amps are the current ratings. The 13.1 and 14.9 are voltages. This is from the Progressive site and is a very good explanation of the discharge, recharge, and maintenance cycles for your batteries. https://www.progressivedyn.com/service/battery-basics/
